The result was that SOGo added 10 copies of each contact, and that
Outlook synched these again.
So now our user has 10 x 10 contacts in his folder.

huge performance fix was pushed a few minutes ago to the cache
de-serialization code. You might want to test the upcoming nightly
builds. The previous code was slow and consuming lots of memory (due to
some GNUstep brain damages).

Hi,
For testing purposes, try setting:
SOGoMaximumPingInterval = 4;
SOGoInternalSyncInterval = 4;
in /etc/sogo/sogo.conf and tell me if it's better.

Perhaps SOGo is generating a very long command and Dovecot rejects it.
