Re: [SOGo] Unresponsive calendar causes Thunderbird to hang on startup

Is it possible for the calendar to either timeout faster or do the update in the background? Its because Thunderbird is needing to build a new cache. Normally the cache would already be on the user's profile and just topped up with the new events. There's been quite a bit of discussion about using the cache on the ml, so that may be a good place to start. It doesnt seem currently possible to allow the caching to happen in the background. I've found Thunderbird 10 and appropriate connector is a bit faster and creating a cache file too -- Kind Regards, Julian -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

[SOGo] Significant Bugs in the the Inverse Lightning version and not the plain version of Lightning ?
Hello As we are talking about Thunderbird Addons for SOGo, I have found a few points I wish to discuss, hopefully find resolutions to. Using Thunderbird 3.1.x and Sogo lightning-1.0b2.105/6i, and SOGo Integrator-1.0b2.105/6i, I have a few issues. Mainly it is that the calendar cache files data gets corrupted quite often for our users and the only way to fix it is to delete the files and start Thunderbird. These files are stored in the user's profile folder under Thunderbird/calendar-data and consist of two files cache.sqllite, and since SOGo lightning version-1.0b.106i, another much smaller file called cache-acl.sqllite. Thunderbird normally takes about 10 mins to recreate the cache files and is locked so nothing can be done with it at the time, (for approx a 1.8MB cache file) ie I think my problem is related to this bug report and mentioned a few times separately by others on this mailing list http://www.sogo.nu/bugs/view.php?id=1573. After looking at the cache-acl.sqllite with sqllite browser, I previously believed that there appeared to be issues with user permissions not tying up with real calendar permissions on the SOGo server. I'm not a coder so can't try to fix this myself. So instead, I installed the plain Mozilla derived Lightning instead ie 1.0b2 (the only one that works with Thunderbird 3.1). What's interesting is that this version only creates a single cache.sqllite file, no acl cache. I strongly believe the the SOGo acl cache file is to blame for the issues when new events don't get shown on the calendars as I never once had this problem once with an earlier version of SOGo and addons from around May to Oct last year. At this point the acl file didn't exist ion the Inverse Lightning build Other things I have noticed today. If you use the plain Mozilla build of Lightning as above, when you delete the cache file and let Thunderbird rebuild its calendar cache, it took took only 90s, instead of the 10 mins or so it takes with the SOGo Lightning - why ?? Also the plain version doesn't hang the rest of Thunderbird; you can still write an email browse your mail while the cache is being built with no slowing down. The SOGo version of Lightning does add some very useful features ie an Organiser of the event, and specific contact categories. I also noticed that using the plain Mozilla version that you could attempt to write into any calendar, even the ones you don't have permission to do so. But when you try to save you get the usual 'Modification failed' message, not particularly helpful. So there are downsides too Comments? We're getting to the point we have to do something as whats in peoples Thunder calendars isn't tying up with what's really on the server - which its not good at all -- Regards, Julian Robbins Web Marketing and IT Manager Q-par Angus Ltd, Barons Cross Laboratories, Leominster, Herefordshire, HR6 8RS, United Kingdom Telephone +44 (0) 1568 612138, Fax +44 (0) 1568 616373, Web www.q-par.com IDEAS ENGINEERED - SPECIALISTS IN MICROWAVE and RF ENGINEERING (Registered office) Incorporated in England No 1826221 -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

I have had no less than 6 android devices over the past few months that I have been testing with SOGo for email and calendar sync. So far it is mostly successful on email (using the modified z-push) but the falling point was calendar. Most of the phones I have tested would put entries on SOGo but wouldn't pull from SOGo. So that lead me to search for PROPER caldav access. Then I found a post here on the list pointing me to the CalDAV sync-Beta by dmfs (https://market.android.com/details?id=org.dmfs.caldav.lib). I must say this has worked 100% on all of the devices I have tested it on. Truly proper 2-way syncing and you can select any of your calendars on SOGo not just your personal one. Also the color coding pulls down too. I do not have any affiliation with the dmfs people, just a very happy customer sharing my thoughts. So if anyone is having half the trouble I was having with syncing calendars on your android device, you need this app. Yes, I would also say that I've been very pleased with this app. The only thing that was missing for me was if I invite an attendee to a meeting on the phone this wouldnt be pushed to SOGo. But this was about the only thing. Also we had one colour (pink) for a calendar that didnt show up as pink but as white, but these were really quite minor things .. Likewise there is a carddav app and separate contact editor too from the same people. Its probably a good idea to update the FAQ, wiki on the inverse site as I dont think they mention this app specifically, when it really should be .. -- Kind Regards, Julian -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

I'd rather try to find what is making SOGo collapse so easily when previously with less memory it was so robust We have an application that fetches a ical (large file2000 entries) file from sogo an this caused this issue every time. After I stopped fetching this ical we don't have any more crashes with SxVMemLimit=1024 with less this still happens. We AFAIK don't have anyone loading ical files. I'm still not totally sure what is causing the excessive ram usage. Recently I did see one worker getting killed, (first example in earlier email), when we had to clear a Lightening cache and mem / cpu increased when Lightning was loading all the events from the server anew : about a 1800kB cache file (in Lightning). Now I know that our friends at MS are not much different, releasing buggy software, and patch it while they go... but it is production platform ready... Well it is in beta, and when running an application like this in production, you are far better waiting for Sogo 2.0.3 or whatever; let others do some testing in real environments first. It depends how 'stable' you need your app to be I'd give it at least a couple of months perhaps But that said, I don't think it will be too long before it will be perfectly usable as a real alternative. Julian This gives me cold feet when I consider SOGo as hosted eXchange alternative. So I ask you in all honesty: is the entire SOGo project ready for installing it on a production server, or not? As you have to manage another identity provider by hand for it, there is a lot of overhead in big environments (we have roughly 14 000 users). So we will not use OpenChange in SOGo before Kerberos authentication is available for it. It provides access for Outlook 2003, 2007 and 2010. I would say this resolved the load issue at least. Now just to see if anyone has the composition issue. So it looks like I was on the right lines about defining WOWorkers in the /etc config file not with the sogo home users GNUStep file. Its easy to miss that with an init script (I know I said daemon but I was rushing to leave at the time). The number of WOWorkers is mentioned in the log on sogo start up, ie 0x0x2297ba0[WOWatchDog] preparing 5 children Nov 30 06:32:41 sogod [28032]: 0x0x2297ba0[WOWatchDog] child spawned with pid 28044 Nov 30 06:32:41 sogod [28032]: 0x0x2297ba0[WOWatchDog] child spawned with pid 28045 Nov 30 06:32:41 sogod [28032]: 0x0x2297ba0[WOWatchDog] child spawned with pid 28046 Nov 30 06:32:41 sogod [28032]: 0x0x2297ba0[WOWatchDog] child spawned with pid 28047 Nov 30 06:32:41 sogod [28032]: 0x0x2297ba0[WOWatchDog] child spawned with pid 28048 Whereas by default, I think its just set to one WOWorker. [SOGo] Downgrade Sogo server from 1.3.9 to 1.3.8b?
Hi We're still having a few problems, difficult to track down where events are not written correctly into the Thunderbird calendar/or caching is working incorrectly, ie where events cannot be saved in a calendar or always show fine in the web calendar. I had no real issues in 1.3.8b and wished I'd stuck to that .. :-( What's the view as to how straight forward it might be to downgrade a SOGo install on an Ubuntu 10.04 server ? We would need to keep our user's data in the MySQL server created in 1.3.9 though Obviously I would test carefully offline first , but wondered what everyone's view is or whether you've done this before ? -- Kind Regards, Julian Robbins -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists
Re: [SOGo] Weird load issue
On 29/11/11 17:29, Donny Brooks wrote: For the past few months since deploying thunderbird with the connector/lightning/integrator plugins to over half of our users we have been having some issues. Mainly, if the load on the server ever reaches 1.00 and you try to compose a new email in thunderbird once you get the first or second letter in the address bar and it just hangs. To exit you have to close the window. We've seen exactly this happen a few times, with same setup, ie sogo with full connector/lightning/integrator plugins. But I don't think its related to load (for us). We only have 35 users so the sogo server load is usually pretty low. We've found that Windows 7 users haven't reported this issue as yet, wheras with XP its happened a few times. (We have no Vista users). But this may be related to the specs of the machines being better with 7. That said we have some uers with slow older Win XP machines that havent seen this issue. It appears that Thunderbird 3 is poor with respect to handling Address Books via Card-dav. Its been mentioned on the list a few times before. Thunderbird 2 was ok apparently. Have you tried using the Sogo Integrator autocomplete delay adjustment user_pref(sogo-connector.autoComplete.delay, 1300); as mentioned in a bug report (sorry not got time to search for it). It helps stopping double letters appearing but may be a bit high in regard to timeouts ... We have it included in the Integrator config so its rolled out into everyone's prefs.js thunderbird file. When the load reaches that high it is always a single sogod process eating up 98%-100% of one of the cpu cores. The machine is a Xen paravirtualized machine with 4 cpu cores and 4GB ram allocated to it. I have to stop and restart httpd/sogod/memcached to get the process to behave. Are you really using WO workers count correctly? You have to set it somewhere in /etc/sogo not in the normal user's GNUStep conf file if running as a daemon. It's in the manual, but easy to miss. The high load affects all users no matter if they access via the web interface or Thunderbird. The only ones not affected are the users that use Thunderbird without the plugins. I have set the WOWorkersCount to 8 for testing but that does not seem to have done anything either way. Generally web users aren't affected here, it always seems to work fine for us. Does anyone have any idea of what could be going on and/or what to do? Since we are rolling this out to all users in one form or another (web interface or thunderbird) now this is imperative I find out what's going on soon. The logs don't seem to be any help at this point but I am still digging through them. Thanks in advace for any help on this. I couldnt see anything in the logs either on this either. Using all latest SOGo and Thunderbird 3.1 with latest Connector and Integrator. I don't know Integrator, but without it, it's no problem. Integrator is quite cool, the way you can upgrade all your Thunderbird addons, or deploy configs for those and Thunderbird/Lightning. But yes, once I remove it, I can only add local address books as required. The problem is that it also removes the buttons that allow subscribing or adding calendars in the calendar view, which is a right pain for me. Something i dont want to lose. I ask this because with Integrator/Connector Thunderbird wants to connect to the address books on the SOGo server, whereas I don't want any addr books to be on there (as Thunderbird 3.1 usage of carddav addr books is quite buggy). That's my experience too. Are here people who say: addressbooks and Thunderbird 3.1 works good with me ? There's been quite a few people who have had issues with this. We find that Windows 7 users seems to be unaffected by the issues, with only Win XP machines with issues. But then I also have XP machines where the problem isnt seen. I would guess that the number of contacts in your address book, might make a difference somehow, as it appears to be a timing issue, with Thunderbird responding too slowly. There are also issues with missing letters when the autoentry fill in of the user's address book with addressbook contacts. I've set the config user_pref(sogo-connector.autoComplete.delay, 1300); via Integrator to user's prefs.js files as suggested by users on this list to mitigate this error. Maybe it's an idea to use read-only Sogo addressbooks in Thunderbird, and do the editing of the addresses on the webinterface? Possibly, but I cant do that here. If I remove Integrator, then address books stay local; but then the buttons to add SOGo calendars and ability to subscribe to a calendar are lost from using the Calendars in Thunderbird ... I want them back . :-) No, when you remove integrator you can subscribe to a Sogo calendar. I think this was the case for me when I first setup SOGo and Thunderbird and Lightning. But certainly now, if I remove Integrator, the buttons for adding a calendar and subscribing to another user's calendar disappear too. Perhaps I need to test with a completely clean profile.. You cannot create a new one in Thunderbird (so far I know), but you can create a new one in the webinterface, and subscribe to it from Thunderbird. Yes, this is the way I'll have to try for now. In here you will see 2 (possibly 3) files. * cache.sqlite * caldav-acl.sqlite (possibly only seen with lightning 106i) * local.sqlite (if you had any calendar events stored locally in Lightning before) I'm not an expert on this, but if you delete the .sqlite files (when Thunderbird isn't running), and restart, then Thunderbird will recreate these files again as a local cache of calendar events and tasks. This might take a few minutes, and Thunderbird won't respond to normal requests whilst its doing this. Likewise the caldav-acl file (much much smaller in size) I believe is the acl data, permissions on your lightning/sogo calendars. You can of course look at these files, and edit them if you want with a sqllite browser such as the GPL SQLite Database Browser In Linux and Windows too. I've found that if you get issues with broken calendars, quite often its because the cache data isn't the same as that on the server. The server is likely to be correct. Sometimes, events are deleted from the sogo server, but aren't properly deleted from the local cache, due to issues with permissions. This is a trick I use sometimes if I get problems, your mileage may vary. I've also found that deleting the cache files helps if a user somehow ends up upgrading to Thunderbird 7/8 with its newer lightning version, and you need to go back to Thunderbird 3.1 with SOGo. I think there was a significant change in working with acl between sogo lightning builds of 105 and 106, and same in std lightning builds, which this can help correct, if necessary. Might be handy if Inverse can comment or have any further docs on how these cache files work, to better fully understand what happens. [SOGo] SOGo calendars but no addr books
Hello Is it possible to have a full SOGo setup, ie SOGo calendars, webmail, addressbooks, using Thunderbird/Lightning with Connector and Integrator but only use Thunderbirds local addressbooks? Using all latest SOGo and Thunderbird 3.1 with latest Connector and Integrator. I ask this because with Integrator/Connector Thunderbird wants to connect to the address books on the SOGo server, whereas I don't want any addr books to be on there (as Thunderbird 3.1 usage of carddav addr books is quite buggy). If I remove Integrator, then address books stay local; but then the buttons to add SOGo calendars and ability to subscribe to a calendar are lost from using the Calendars in Thunderbird ... I want them back . :-) -- Kind Regards, Julian -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

Hi Ian Nice to see another UK user of SOGo ! ;-) Firstly, sharing of email folders and sharing of calendars is completely different. Out customer frequently update TB unintentionally and we must reinstall manually old version (by vnc) Maybe the best way is disable thunderbird upgrade by sogo-integrator variable for remain always into a TB stable version. Exactly the same for us. I've twice had to downgrade one users to 3.1.15 from Thunderbird 7 ... How can we use sogo-integrator to disable a Thunderbird (major) update ? We have Integrator installed here already Julian Robbins UK -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

Re: [SOGo] Newbie questions about SQL authentication

I used this excellent guide to sogo where there show you how to set up the config with a SQL database http://www.linuxjournal.com/article/10894 Julian I have a few basic questions about SQL authentication that were not clear when reading installation guide: - I have created a PostgreSQL database and a user as instructed, but in the guide there was nothing about the actual data that should go in the DB? Do I need to create some tables as well? - Managing User Accounts talked about LDAP only. How do I create an admin user with SQL? - Is this the way SOGo is intended to be used: 1. With SOGo web interface, after creating an admin user I create a normal user 2. I specify the IMAP credentials for this user in SOGo with the admin user account 3. Now the user can log into SOGo and see his email + new shared calendar If so, this means that I need to manage two user databases, in the IMAP server and in SOGo? And if a user changes his/her IMAP password by not using SOGo but for e.g. external webmail, I am in trouble? I have a feeling that I have not yet grasped all the principles of this software package and I am missing some points here :) Best regards, Peter -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists
Re: [SOGo] Invitations

Before I clicked on accept and it was OK, but since some time I cannot accept or decline invitations anymore in the mail, the buttons are missing. How can I change this? (I am using the latest Sogo and Mozilla Lightning Inverse Edition.) I have had the same issues. Its annoying when it happens. Its a long story, but for now what I have done is to use the patch mentioned in this bug post from inverse http://www.sogo.nu/bugs/view.php?id=781 The patch works fine, but its a bit of a pain to implement as you have to zip up the xpi files and locate and patch the files inside. I haven't documented the process but will sometime. The patch wasnt taken up by inverse at the time as it didnt work for external users somehow, but I've seen no issues in that regard Julian UK With regards, Paul. -- Kind Regards, Julian Robbins Web Marketing and IT Manager Q-par Angus Ltd Barons Cross Laboratories Leominster Herefordshire HR6 8RS United Kingdom Telephone +44 (0) 1568 612138 Fax +44 (0) 1568 616373 Web www.q-par.com IDEAS ENGINEERED - SPECIALISTS IN MICROWAVE and RF ENGINEERING (Registered office) Incorporated in England No 1826221 -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists
[SOGo] Setting Calendars name and Colour
Hi Is there a means to setup the colours of calendars plus the name that you see when using the calendar in Lightning? Also is there a way to only use a set of categories that can set on the server rather than the default set with Birthdays, etc that isn't really appropriate for a business? Using 1.38b with up to date Thunderbird/Lightning , Sogo Integrator and Connector -- Kind Regards, Julian Robbins -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

Right now, all is hard coded. If someone want to improve this adding an option in the prefs, I just don't know how to do this... On a related matter can you tell me how you manage to build (and apply) a diff against several files in zipped archive such as a xpi ? I need to do this to apply the 'patch' to make sogo work fully with invite invitations and have only patched the various files in the .xpi file manually .. -- Kind Regards, Julian Robbins Web Marketing and IT Manager -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists

For now, by hands ^^ : un-zip ; apply patch ; re-zip... I'm willing to make a script to automate this... but it is time consuming and for the little modifications made on this... it is faster by hand ! Ok, I wondered if there was a super quick auto way to do this, but it seems not. At least I know now. Thanks for getting back to me Julian -- users@sogo.nu https://inverse.ca/sogo/lists
