We've sucxessfully built RPMs last week. This week is documentation week. We
plan to release within the next 14 days. That will also include RPMs.

As far as I can tell, automx is running under Centos6.2. All required
dependencies are in the standard repositories. So it shouldn't be too hard to
prepare RPM packages. Last time I had done RPMs was under SuSE 8.4. That's a
while ago; hope that has not changed too much since these days ;-)

yes it is, but not as fast as we ourselves would like to see it move.

I will have time to work on automx documentation starting wednesday. Once that
is done RPMS are next on the TODO list.

Thunderbird autoconfig is reasonably easy, but it's nice to have the

You are correct. I used the term the wrong way. I did not mean proprietary as
wikipedia defines it

"In telecommunications, a proprietary protocol is a communications
protocol owned by a single organization or individual.[1]"

or as most others (probably) understand it.

What I meant to say was "they don't use a common, standardized
mechanism/protocol" to do it, but each do their own thing.

I am curious why you are calling both autoconfiguration ways
"proprietary". Can you clarify that ?

I don't see anything proprietary about Thunderbird's autoconfig:
https://wiki.mozilla.org/Thunderbird:Autoconfiguration

And I can't find references to Microsoft putting any
restrictions/licensing on their autoconfiguration.

This is important, specially in enterprise settings where such details
blow up in an admin's face *after* prototyping/testing/implementation.

Making this particularly clear on the site (automx's) would also help
clear any confusion.

Thanks for any further information.

Exactly. As simple as that.

> So if I already setup mozillas autoconfig

> only use Thunderbird, it would be the same result, wouldn't it?

Yes, with the two significant differences:

- automx is ONE TOOL that provides service for clients (TB, KMail, Kontact and
  - rumor - some Android mobiles) following MOZILLAs standard and clients
(Outlook 2003+, MS Mobiles) following MICROSOFTs way of client account
  profile provisioning.
- automx can serve dynamic profiles for many domains i.e. not only one static
file, but e.g. lookup user specific settings in a database or LDAP server
and return a profile especially built for that one user/group.
You can, for example, have two MDAs (Exchange/SOGo) and tell group A to use
Exchange and group B to use SOGo.
You can also script it. Take a look at the section_filter feature. The dark
side of provisioning it leads you to ... ;)

Cool! I'm still not 100% sure what the tool does: It would be enough to
know your name, mail and password to setup an account? And that in a

Glad you like it!

automx unifies two proprietary standards from Microsoft and Mozilla. Both
use http(s) for client and server communication. Mozilla uses a GET request
and transmits a mail address. Microsoft uses a POST request and sends an XML
file which may contain more than a mail address.

Microsoft and Mozilla send their data to different URLs. That makes it easy to
tell them apart and return something they will accept as account profile. In
either case the server (automx) sends an XML response. You can use the
automx-test comnand line tool to see what automx turns back like this:

$ automx-test aut...@state-of-mind.de

Any client using Microsofts autodiscover schema will require a trusted https
session. That in turn means you need to get out and get a SSL cert first.
There are cheap ssls (<- hint) out there.

Mail.app and iPhones do not support network based autoconfiguration at the
moment. Cyrus Daboo (as Apple member) created an RFC specifying DNS based
autoconfiguration through SRV records, but neither do Macs currently imlement
that RFC nor would it take that feature as far as Microsoft took it, when they
came up with autodiscover. autodiscover can, for example, specify a TTL for an
account profile. The client will revisit the server then and check for changed
account settings; perfect in my eyes as migration hook.
