Apologies for answering my own question, but on some very basic tests so 
far, there is quite an improvement in the response time when composing 
an email or Inviting an attendee to an event. Previously, it would take 
a second or two for email addresses to be returned using carddav, which 
doesn't sound long, but did make the application feel sluggish in use.


Now with Thunderbird 10 and associated connector, lightning 1.2.1 and 
integrator these email addresses appear almost instantaneously.


I am not totally sure if this will fix my related issue above where on 
occasion composing an email hangs the whole of Thunderbird but certainly 
there has been something that has changed, which can only help ..
