For your second issue, have a look at 
http://www.sogo.nu/bugs/view.php?id=3154 and see if it the same as you 
are experiencing?  In my experience it is the first IMAP account that 
the credentials come from but you may have run into a different issue.

Ok, I dug a bit deeper here ...:
It seems that I did not quite left everything else unchanged:

- Activating the "read only" check box results in a non-working remote 
address book - i.e. sync only works, if I leave "read only" unchecked. 
Oh, well, not quite, what I wanted, but it could be worse ...

I am having a hard time setting up Thunderbird 31.7.0 with SOGo
Connector 31.0.1 (running Ubuntu 14.04) in order to be able to sync my
ownCloud 7.0.2 based CardDAV contacts with Thunderbird's address book.

does not seem to be a ownCloud-based problem.)
