Spamd processes hanging at auto-whitelist with 30 timeout

All, I have a problem where, several times a day, all the spamd child processes will hang waiting to lock the /path/to/auto-whitelist. I'm trying to narrow down what is causing this but have found nothing yet. The partition is running on ext3. Any thoughts? TIA
