It does not relate to your problem (and probably won't solve it) but I just
wanted to point out that I made good experiences using
-XX:+UseCompressedOops on 64bit systems to reduce bloat which might be
another issue in your case. It kept the memory footprint about 30% lower.

Thanks for clarification. There are a lot of misleading configuration
'tweaks' roaming around which do not seem to have any effect (or at least
not in recent versions). The minimal config now works well for me.
