My startup script (many years old) uses:
CLASSPATH=$CLASSPATH:$CATALINA_HOME/bin/bootstrap.jar
So its quite possible if the $CLASSPATH is empty we get the :/
The odd thing is why does it work when run from the command line but not
from /etc/rc.d/init.d as both use case have the colon.
