I had a similar problem when I switched to tomcat6, as a workaround I
ended up modifying my jsp to build the string outside of the %=..% bit
and insert it in one lump.
Ie changed something like
%= ' + otherthing + '%
into
%
String txt = ' + otherthing + ';
%
%= txt %
which seemed to make it
