That can mean a million things. What exactly happens when you try to access
the manager?

Considering that all of Tomcat's configuration files are XML, and in
general Java and XML seem to be BFFs, learning basic aspects of
XML would seem to be highly desirable.

Aside from that, what god-awful anachronism of an editor could you
possibly be using that doesn't understand XML syntax? :-)

You mean an XML comment, warning that an XML comment follows ?

I respectfully suggest that getting yourself an XML-aware editor may be
the better way to go, to save you grief there and in many other XML-rich

In my case, vi. Much of my UNIX admin involves ssh into headless
production machines in datacentres with stock OS builds. Frequently,
asking the client to install even xterm and the appropriate libraries
is met with outright refusal, let alone an editor that's not in the
stock build.

One of these decades I'll learn Emacs. Now where's my list of
meta-alt-shift line-noise Emacs commands, to go with my list of
:something line-noise vi commands? ;-)

I use vi(m) too (among other editors) both locally for quick edits and
in the same environment you cite -- but I still have nice color syntax
highlighting in both. Not sure why you wouldn't have that too.

OTOH, if I'm doing more complex stuff I'll use jEdit's remote editing
over SSH capability, which requires nothing unusual on the far end.

Either way, it's pretty obvious when something gets commented out :-)
