RE: Upgrade from 5.5.9 to 5.5.20 Help

2009-09-29 Thread Corrin, Simon P
As this was my first post thanks for your quick reply!

I would love to go with the latest version but the software manufacture
only certifies 5.5.20 and if there are issues with another version you
are on your own.

The current installation has been in production for a while now and is
working well, so hoping your advice to copy the config files, etc...
over will work well. I will give it a try and see how it goes.

Thanks!

Simon.

  From version: 5.5.9

Other than that it is a pretty vanilla installation.

There's no patch or upgrade methodology.

You simply grab the latest version and install it in parallel, then
reconfigure as needed.

May I suggest that you just upgrade to the latest version (5.5.28)?
5.5.20 seems have been released very late 2007 - there's been
substantial work/bugfixes done since then.

The config (assuming your original is correct) will be identical, so you

should be able to install a new copy from tomcat.apache.org, and pretty
much copy paste the contents of your various config files.

It is worth noting, however, that writing a fresh config is often a good

idea - especially if you've repeatedly carried old configs over from
ancient versions.

The list will assist if you get stuck with config.

Given a) how old 5.5.20 is and b) the number of known security vulnerabilities
I'd be asking that manufacturer when they were planning on certifying a recent
version.

Remember to read the change log, so you can see if any breaking
configuration changes have been made over time. This will happen if you
do things like play games with certain characters in URLs (like /)
because certain security fixes have changed Tomcat's behavior slightly.

I believe every change like this has a configuration option to revert to
the legacy behavior if necessary. Just make sure you read the change log
and test everything thoroughly.
