It will be null for non-Ajax (i.e. the fallback) requests when the user has 
Javascript disabled. In those cases the entire page will be redrawn anyway so 
there is no need to explicitly repaint subsets.

yesterday I found out in the example above that the target object is null if I 
click with the right mouse button on the link and select open in new window.
Does someone know why?
