I had the same problem a few days ago...
Same message and same issue about the memory allowed to JAVA_OPTS in the
startup script.
I allowed 1024m to this and upgraded my platform to 4GB of RAM.
Since this issue, i'm looking on the xwiki memory usage and it's growing
every day...
