Actually found a better solution as described on https://community.jboss.org/wiki/HibernateCoreMigrationGuide36 Don't change xwiki.hbm.xml but instead add the following in your hibernate.cfg.xml: property name=jdbc.use_streams_for_binaryfalse/property Let me know how it goes. Thanks

Xar is a set of wiki pages that is stored in the database. When you restore your old backup - you automatically end-up with previous version of xar. So you DO need to import the new xar file, but as Jerem validly pointed (!) see that you don't override your custom settings (simply do not import
