Hi Sophie, There's no problem in doing that.
The mailsender plugin is not deprecated yet. It's the plugin technology that is deprecated and should not be used to create new modules. I agree the way this information is presented might not be very clear to newcomers. We should probably review that. You can use/modify the example from the documentation for your panel.
