[xwiki-users] XWiki Features survey for the 6.x cycle

2013-12-19 Thread Silvia Rusu
Hi,

In 2009 and 2012 the xwiki.org project launched some surveys about
features to have in XWiki in priority:
http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/SurveyXWikiFeatures2009
(results at: http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Blog/FeatureStatus20120119
)
http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/SurveyXWikiFeatures2012
(results at:
http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/FeatureSurveyResult201204
)

I thought it would be nice to launch a similar survey in 2013 in order
to give the project some information to prepare the XWiki 6.x roadmap.
The survey is available at:
http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/SurveyXWikiFeatures2013

It would be great if you could help by filling in the survey by January 31.
The results will be published on xwiki.org and shared
with the XWiki committers list at the beginning of February.

Thank you,
Silvia

Re: [xwiki-users] Macro for related pages or sons pages or see also

2013-05-09 Thread Silvia Rusu
Hi!

What could be useful is the Information tab at the bottom of pages. There
you can find information about:
* The parent for the current page
* Children
* Backlinks

E.g. for the platform features page we have:
http://platform.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Features/WebHome#Information

Re: [xwiki-users] how to let my new panel displayed on the right of the page?

2013-05-09 Thread Silvia Rusu
Hi!

There is a high probability you only added the panel for the Panels space
and not the whole wiki. You need to make sure you go to the Wiki
Administration and add it from there:
* Hover the wiki menu and click on Administer Wiki
* Click Look  Feel
* Click Panel Wizard
* Drag and drop the panel
* Click Save the new layout
* Go to the wiki homepage and check if the panel appears.

You can also check that the page layout is set to Right column:
* Hover the wiki menu and click on Administer Wiki
* Click Look  Feel
* Click Panel Wizard
* Click on the Page Layout tab and check that Right column is selected.

Please let us know if this works.

That is why I propose to add a new field : developed by.
Thanks to this, it will be easier to understand who did what and who

[xwiki-users] [Proposal] Improving the Product Documentation and Getting Started pages

2011-12-15 Thread Silvia Rusu
Hi,

Caty and Vincent are doing a very nice job improving xwiki.org's look
and navigation. I think improving a bit the content is also a good
idea, so I have a few proposals in this direction.

* Improving the Documentation landing page, available from the website
menu (http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Main/ProductDocumentation).
Here is a proposal with some small additions:
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/DocumentationImprovedHomepage

* Improving the Getting Started guide's WebHome
(http://enterprise.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/GettingStarted/WebHome).
Draft proposal at:
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/GettingStartedPage

* We could also use the Getting Started page proposed above on XWiki
Enterprise (the product). This would be a page inside the wiki (e.g.
like the Sandbox or Syntax pages) which would be linked from the wiki
Homepage. It could be helpful to wiki users who don't know where to
look for information.

Waiting for your feedback and votes.

Thanks,

 Hi all,

Some time ago we discussed [1] a proposal

about changing the way our community website (www.xwiki.org) looks like
(improved homepage, improved navigation, new logo [2], new skin, community
 wiki [3], etc.).

Since then there have been some small collaborative efforts to make this new
site come true and I want to thank for their help to Sergiu Dumitriu, Marta
Girdea, Jean-Vincent Drean, Raluca Stavro, Vincent Massol, Silvia Rusu,
Raluca Moisa, Stefan Orzu and all the people that gave feedback.

In order to speed up the process we also created a development wiki
 http://newxwiki.xwiki.org/
where you can log in with your xwiki.org credentials and work on the
improvements you want to make. After the work is finished it will be ported
to xwiki.org. This way you can experiment the way your code looks like and
behaves without interfering with the live site.

Also me and Silvia created a planning for the development of the new site
 http://incubator.myxwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Improvements/XWikiOrgPlanning
and we have split it into 4 stages. We are currently in Stage 1 of the
 development.

Each entry has it own link with more information/mockups/code about the
feature. Also features that have been started have also a JIRA issue
 attached to them.

We would be very happy if the community could get involved in helping us
making this happen. We still need work on deciding the content for some
sections, we need better design proposals for some elements and we need lots
of implementation work to make everything a reality.

If you want to participate you should pick something from the planning and
announce it on this thread so that we know what feature is taking care of.

 Thank you,
 Caty

This is due to the fact that adding a comment is considered a minor event.

This behavior is still taking place in the most recent versions of XWiki

comments should be treated as major events, the same way that adding an

Therefore I propose making adding a comment a major event instead of a minor

[xwiki-users] Implementing the XWiki.org Redesign

2010-04-15 Thread Silvia Rusu
Hi XWiki devs users,

So far we've been talking a lot about redesigning XWiki.org and all
feedback was greatly appreciated. Now it's time we started implementing
the redesign Caty was so kind to come up with based on our suggestions.

Like the proposal stage this too will be a collaborative effort and we
hope you'll join in building an even better site for XWiki.org. The
following is a list of things that need to be implemented in order to
get us started. It would be great if you'd volunteer for the
implementation of the tasks at hand. Please add your name next to the
issue you'd like to assign yourself too. Also feel free to add as many
other issues you think should appear on the list and to volunteer for
those issues as well.

Here is the first list of tasks:

* Set up the server for the new website (Alex? :) )

* Add the horizontal navigation to the new website

* Implement the projects carousel for the homepage

* Implement the panels for Latest Releases, Latest Extensions.
Latest News(should display the latest 5 releases, extensions, news)

Documentation/Projects

* Implement the left navigation for documentation/projects

* Implement the panel for the Latest Documentation Updates (should
display the last 5 documents and their authors)

Community page widgets and panels:

* Implement theDevelopment Status panel, if it's going to have dynamic
content

* Implement the Top Committers panel (show the committer's picture and
number of commits)

* Implement the Latest Commits section (should display an image of the
committer, what (s)he commited, the name of the committer and the date
the commit was made)

* Implement the Latest Issues section (should have the latest Jira
issues, the person who took an action with regard to the issue - e.g.
create, close - and the time the action was taken)

* Implement the Latest Discussion section (display the list, the topic
discussed, the name of the person that added the latest reply and the
time he added the answer)

* Implement the Latest Documentation section (show the number of lines
added/deleted, the name of the document, the author of the modification
and the time (s)he made the changes)

* Implement Latest Extensions section (display the extension name, the
name of the person that added the extension, the time it was added and a
short description)

[xwiki-users] [Proposal] Improving the User Guide documentation

2010-03-01 Thread Silvia Rusu

Hello,

I would like to propose we update the User Guide documentation so that it's
more helpful to users that start using XWiki, whether they are programmers
or not. The purpose of the guide is to get users up to speed with the XWiki
basics, to gather these resources in one place.

You can find my proposal for the user guide here:
http://dev.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Drafts/UserGuide

Please feel free to make suggestions for other pages to be included or
changes you think should be made. Remember this is not a TOC for all the
documentation, but rather a selection of links to help you get started with
XWiki.

 with
  XWiki.

Good start! It's cool that you're working on this, we absolutely need it
 :)

 Some feedback:

 * It doesn't feel like a guide right now. It seems to be a collection of
links to other places. Personally I like that because it avoids
duplication. However I wonder what will first time users think. It
probably makes it hard for them to read. Also the current getting started
guide from Guillaume (which would disappear as a consequence) has a lot
more texts and explanations that need to be reintegrated in the user
 guide.

I think the collection of links makes it easier for users to spot the
documentation they are interested in. I agree that Guillaume's Getting
Started guide needs to be reintegrated in the user guide as much as
possible. As a consequence I've added links to part of the pages. Other
issues however, like managing user groups, are better described in the
platform documentation (more information, screenshots), so I preferred
adding a link to those resources instead. If the Getting Started pages will
be removed altogether I can copy their content to different pages and set
the User Guide as their parent. I'll also include more screenshots.

 * It's missing an overall TOC

I added the TOC at the XWiki Basics level, but this can easily be changed.

 * I only see XWiki Basics but this guide is supposed to be a full guide
to all features. Is it simply because it's not finished? How would you
 organize the rest?

My initial idea was for the guide to provide links to part of the
documentation. This would be the pages that are most necessary when starting
with XWiki and that don't require programming or advanced admin skills to
understand. (Hence This is not a TOC for all the documentation, but rather
a selection of links to help you get started with XWiki. in the first
email).

I've extended the invitation for users to visit the Developer
Administrator's Guides to further their skills and get a deeper
understanding of XWiki.

This way Getting started is interpreted not necessarily as the first steps
to take with XWiki, but rather as mastering the basics of working with
XWiki, with the possibility of enhancing your skills as you read the rest of
the documentation.

Should we add links to all our existing resources I think the User Guide may
get too crowded and users with no significant coding experience may have
trouble understanding it.

WDYT?

 * I think you need the guide to start with a single page that is a TOC and
have more separate pages. This will come naturally as a consequence of
adding more explanations/texts to the each section (see first point
 above).
The idea behind the User Guide page was that of a TOC (this is why it looks
more like a collection of links). The small pieces of text are there to put
the links in context, so that they make sense when seeing them for the first
time.

I agree with the having more separate pages. While in some sections the
existing documentation is enough, for other areas we could add a lot more
details to make things clear. This is the case of the blog for example
(which is not yet included) for which there will be a separate guide. After
the blog guide is ready there will be of course a link to it from the User
Guide. The same goes for the WYSIWYG editor. This can be also done for other
sections if users consider the existing documentation is not
clear/descriptive enough.

 * The guide needs a lot more screenshots IMO. There should be screenshots
everywhere. Remember that an image is worth a thousand words ;)

I think we should avoid having images on the User Guide's main page (the one
in Drafts) since this page's role is that of a TOC. I agree with having many
screenshots in the sub-guides (e.g. the blog and wysiwyg guides, the new
pages resulting from the old Getting Started guide)

 Thanks
 -Vincent

  Silvia

Re: [xwiki-users] [Proposal] Improving the User Guide documentation

2010-03-01 Thread Silvia Rusu

Hi,

After reading all your emails I think the best solution is having both a
guide for first time users and a complete guide to all XWiki features:

- The Getting Started page can become the draft included in this email
- The User Guide could be a TOC of all existing resources as Vincent
suggested.

This way both experienced and unexperienced users are happy:
- First time users can discover XWiki one step at a time with the help of
the Getting Started page
- Experienced users don't have to look for information through the different
wikis and can instead go to the User Guide TOC.

Smaller guides will be made as suggested in the previous email for the blog,
wysiwyg, etc. These will be linked from both the Getting Started page and
the User Guide.

WDYT?

[xwiki-users] Hello to the XWiki community

2009-08-20 Thread Silvia Rusu
Hi,

I am Silvia Rusu (http://www.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/XWiki/SilviaRusu)
and I have joined the XWiki Iasi team this week as a tester and
documentation writer.

As a tester my role will be to uncover any issues and inconsistencies
that might affect the products you love developing/using.
I will also be talking to our project managers, product manager and
mailing list users in order to find out more about our customers
expectations and needs. Taking this into consideration I will come up
with suggestions on how to improve user experience.

As a documentation writer I will make sure users who aren't familiar
with XWiki discover what the products do in order to take advantage of
their features. In the process I will be making sure all user-facing
features are well documented on XWIki.org, writing user guides, creating
videos explaining how to use features, etc.

I am happy to be joining XWiki and hope this will develop into a very
successful collaboration.
