Re: [libreoffice-users] Java

2022-12-20 Thread Robert Großkopf

Hi Joe,

What is the correct procedure to install java so that LibreOffice can
recognize and use it.

UBUNTU 22.04LTS, LibreOffice Community 7.3.7.2

I havn't installed Ubuntu before. But for testing a server I installed
UBUNTU 22.04 on an old notebook. It installed LibreOffice complete,
together with Base. And Base could start, a table could be created in
internal HSQLDB.

This is the Java version it will show:
Ubuntu 11.0.17
saved at /usr/lib/jvm/java-11-openjdk-amd64

Might be this is the way to get it separate:

sudo apt update
sudo apt install default-jre

Hi Peggy,

you could install bith versions of Java without any problem on the same
machine. If your LO is 64bit you need 64bit-Java for this one; if the
browser is 32bit you need 32bit for the browser.

The goal of the JRE is, as the name Java Runtime Environment says, that it
should be sufficient to run Java functionality.
In all discussions I miss why LO needs more then the runtime environment...
We should work to bring LO in the boundary of of the JRE.

Funny, I have been using LibreOffice 5.1 since Beta 1 on two different
MacBooks without any issue. Only if I use a wizard LibreOffice asks for
Java, otherwise the program runs fine (no Java installed on one Mac). I
will look if anyone has filed a bug.

I think you need to install 32-bit or 64-bit Java as appropriate to
match LibreOffice. You can install both on a 64-bit system, so that both
32-bit and 64-bit applications can use Java.

Wasn't there something a while back about LibreOffice on Mac not
recognising Java 8 unless Java 7 was also installed, or something like
that? I don't know if that's still the case; I don't have a Mac so
haven't followed it closely. From what I recall I think it was a bug in
Java, not something LibreOffice could do anything about.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Java LO and OSX

2014-11-06 Thread Marc Grober
Sorry I changed the subject line there... I have never been able to get
the list to copy me with my posts and I just forgot that I had the post
in Sent mail.

The point of the posts was to note that in fact it is easy enough to get
LO working on Yosemite but it requires a bit of messing about, some of
which is counter-intuitive.

To recap, LO was tweaked months ago so that java was not sourced when it
comes up (unless you make it do that, lol) which avoids the maddening
issue of seemingly being unable to change your java prefs. If you have
the current LO version, you will be able to open LO, but LO will crash
when you try to open any file without Apple Java 6
Yes, LO still requires the initial presence of Apple Java 6, and, Apple
OS upgrade blows the previous Apple Java configuration away
Once Apple Java 6 is re-installed, you can go into Preferences-Advanced
and select Oracle Java (if you previously installed it, it will still be
there as the upgrade does not remove it)
If you install a more recent Oracle JDK after you install the Apple
Java, the Apple Java will no longer appear in Preferences, and you can
select the Oracle Java you want LO to use. Why? beats me.
Once that is all done you can open/create LO docs that invoke java
without the crashing.
Apple Java resides in its own location and will simply from that point
on be ignored.
Remember that you can install just an Oracle JRE, or you can install an
Oracle JDK, which comes with the JRE. Your JDK is not updated like your
JRE may be. Check your JDK from time to time.

On the contrary: the list will certainly send you a copy of your own
messages. But the new behaviour is because you have chosen Gmail as
your mail provider. As someone has already said, it is Gmail that is
the culprit. Google's support pages say When you send mail to any

your inbox and archives the message to save you time and prevent
clutter. You will have your own opinion of whether this is a feature or a bug!

If you use IMAP for gmail, you will have a folder named [Gmail]

then I can see both methods in LO. So I can select any of
the two and run them. However, no matter which one of the
two I try to run, only the CO.CO_submit method will be run.

 What am I doing wrong?

I haven't found a single example on the internet or in the

Surely I could duplicate the jar and parcel-descriptor files
and define one method in each of them but that seems too
 inefficient.

Suppose I have another class method (CO_test) I'd like to
call from LO. I'd like to add CO.CO_test just like I
 declared CO.CO_submit.
 How can I do this?

 If I try the following:

 ?xml version=1.0 encoding=UTF-8?
 parcel language=Java xmlns:parcel=scripting.dtd
     script language=Java
         locale lang=en
             displayname

 /description
         /locale
         functionname
 value=CO.CO_test/
         logicalname
 value=CO.CO_test/
         languagedepprops
             prop
 name=classpath value=COLO.jar/
         /languagedepprops
     /script
 /parcel

then I can see both methods in LO. So I can select any of
the two and run them. However, no matter which one of the
two I try to run, only the CO.CO_submit method will be run.

 What am I doing wrong?

I haven't found a single example on the internet or in the
docs where a parcel-descriptor defines more than one method
 to call.

Surely I could duplicate the jar and parcel-descriptor files
and define one method in each of them but that seems too
 inefficient.

 Thanks,

 Vieri

Re: [libreoffice-users] java macro

2013-05-09 Thread William Drago

Tom Vieri,

Let's not get the Java browser plugin and the Java
programming language confused...

Java is an excellent programming language and in no way can
be considered any less solid than C++. In fact, in many ways
it is more secure and more reliable than code written in C++.

What people are uninstalling/disabling (even me) is the Java
browser plugin, not the JRE/JDK. The plugin has indeed had
many security issues, and with Flash and HTML5 very few
people are using Java applets in their websites anymore.

So... Java plugin = bad. Java programming language = excellent.

Now that that's settled, C++ is a language that every
programmer should at least be familiar with. Whatever
language you choose as a primary programming language is
determined by a variety of factors, but as a general rule
you'll be more productive in Java than C++.

Python is also an excellent programming language, but I have
too little experience with it to comment any further than that.

2013-05-09 Thread Vieri
Hi Tom,

I just need to get the job done.
Right now, I can use whatever language, just as long as it's supported within
LO. The problem with LO and OOo is that it apparently supports X programming
language (such as Java) but there's barely enough documentation on how to bind
it to the application. For instance, I followed a guide to run Java macros in
LO but they simply don't show up in LO/run macros. That's beyond the scope of
programming per-se. It's more of how LO deals with macros.
Anyway, maybe I'll have better luck with Python (as far as its integration
with LO is concerned).

Thanks,

Vieri

Hi :)
Regina know a lot more about all this so hopefully her answer will fix it.

There are a couple of places to get written documentation but probably not as
many as we would like.  This list is often quite a good place to get single
issue answers but for a broader perspective Chapter 13 of the Getting Started
Guide might help a bit.  I think Andrew Pitonyak wrote it and it's free
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Publications#Getting_Started_with_LibreOffice
but the best place manual is Andrew Pitonyaks' book at the bottom of the 3rd
party section for programmers
https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Documentation/Other_Documentation_and_Resources#Programmers

Good luck with this!

Hi Regina,

I followed those guides too but the sentence The OpenOffice.org Scripting
module has been tested with NetBeans 3.4. got me thinking that it may not be
wise to use something that's apparently not updated (I have netbeans 7.3).
I'm not saying it's outdated so I may give it a try tomorrow.

Anyway, I then found another guide and I believe it explains the netbeans part
a little more deeply and doesn't really require a module (the only thing I have
to do manually is prepare the xml descriptor and copy the jar files to the LO
script dir):
http://wiki.openoffice.org/wiki/Scripting_in_Java_with_NetBeans_IDE
The part that I was doing wrong was related to point 10 in that guide. I
wasn't placing my classes within default package.

Surely I read other articles here and there but with these two it should be
enough.

I disabled Java (not Javascript) in my Firefox with no apparent

I may also note that Slackware Linux no longer packages Java with their
latest release (14.0), as they have done in the past. I read from the
S14.0 Changes and Hints.txt file: jre - removed due to licensing
issues. (jre is Java Runtime Environment.) Not supplying Java is a
sign to me that it is not needed. Slackware has always been strict
about bundling Open Source GPL software with their Linux distributions.

If you don't seem to need it then don't use it. I thik that's a good general rule. A bit like if no-one is in the kitchen then why have the lights on in there?

Micheal Meeks was saying that it's still ok to write Extensions in Java but you are not writing Extensions. You are like me, just a normal user. His advice does seem to contradict everything i am hearing about Java at the moment. The devs seem to have put a lot of effort into reducing the amount of Java to the point where most users are unlikely to ever need it.

However, Micheal is one of the lead devs and well respected so he is much more likely to really know what is really going on whereas my information is 2nd or 3rd hand and i'm not a dev so i could easily be missing some crucial points. I think maybe i was a bit too harsh about blaming Oracle for all of Java's problems. Maybe it was horribly broken before or that currrent problems were inevitable or maybe reported problems are over-stated.

I switched Java off months ago and had no problems so i finally uninstalled it around December and still had no problems. I think that is the best route. Removing Java completely could be troublesome so it's best to have a trial-period of seeing if you can do without it before uninstalling it. You probably wouldn't take the bulb out of the kitchen light just because you didn't think you would go into the kitchen at night. It appears that Homeland Security in the US are recommending people uninstall it but that could be a bogus report and even if not then it seems they may not have considered the implications for normal or corporate users.

A couple of machines at my place where Java is still installed grumble when i open Firefox now, roughly since the Homeland Security report apparently. Firefox now offers to update various plugins and things such as Adobe Flash-Player, Adobe Reader(?!) and Java but then tells me it's automatically blocked Java for me anyway.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Java

2013-03-22 Thread Dan Lewis
What are you using in LibreOffice that requires Java? Is there
something that you would like to use that requires Java? If so, by all
means update and enable it. Otherwise don't do anything about it.
I have Java enabled because I work with Base much of the time. (It
requires Java.) Otherwise, I probably would not need it myself.

Re: [libreoffice-users] Java

2013-03-22 Thread Tom Davies
Hi :)
I think Dan's point is key.

If you don't seem to need it then don't use it. I thik that's a good general
rule. A bit like if no-one is in the kitchen then why have the lights on in
there?

Micheal Meeks was saying that it's still ok to write Extensions in Java but you
are not writing Extensions. You are like me, just a normal user. His advice
does seem to contradict everything i am hearing about Java at the moment. The
devs seem to have put a lot of effort into reducing the amount of Java to the
point where most users are unlikely to ever need it.

However, Micheal is one of the lead devs and well respected so he is much more
likely to really know what is really going on whereas my information is 2nd or
3rd hand and i'm not a dev so i could easily be missing some crucial points. I
think maybe i was a bit too harsh about blaming Oracle for all of Java's
problems. Maybe it was horribly broken before or that currrent problems were
inevitable or maybe reported problems are over-stated.

I switched Java off months ago and had no problems so i finally uninstalled it
around December and still had no problems. I think that is the best route.
Removing Java completely could be troublesome so it's best to have a
trial-period of seeing if you can do without it before uninstalling it. You
probably wouldn't take the bulb out of the kitchen light just because you
didn't think you would go into the kitchen at night. It appears that Homeland
Security in the US are recommending people uninstall it but that could be a
bogus report and even if not then it seems they may not have considered the
implications for normal or corporate users.

A couple of machines at my place where Java is still installed grumble when i
open Firefox now, roughly since the Homeland Security report apparently.
Firefox now offers to update various plugins and things such as Adobe
Flash-Player, Adobe Reader(?!) and Java but then tells me it's automatically
blocked Java for me anyway.

Regards from
Tom :)

this one: it seem that a call to getenv() caused a segfault, which
seems odd. Only cause I can see for this is calling getenv() with a
NULL value, which would be quite hard from a Java program since the
call should be wrapped by the JVM, but it's not impossible either.

Howdy oh transparent one.

Known problem - not recognizing version 7.

The fix is in the code for the 3.5 release already.

There has been some talk about backing that fix into a 3.4.x release,
but I don't believe that a final decision has happened on that just yet
- could be wrong on that, it's hard to follow every conversation.

So - you could, given that Java 6u29 is still the official stable
release, add that to your workstations as a temporary fix - you could
start LibO, go to ToolsOptionsJava and explicitly change the setting
to NOT use a java runtime - this will I think help your start up, but
not 100% sure on that, especially under Windows.

Otherwise - ??

Best wishes,

Drew Jensen
