Re: XPS 13 (9360)

2018-02-11 Thread Eddie O'Connor
I can appreciate the fact that the hardware is nice. but my brother has
one...and its giving him headaches. (LITERALLY!) It seems Dell has some
kind of "adaptive brightness' feature in the FHD model (its an XPS 13 9343
I believe!) and when he's in an IDE/text editor with a dark theme?...the
screen DARKENS, then when/if he has to hit Google for something it gets
ridiculously bright! he's been complaining of headaches ever since he got
the darn thingbut here's the kick in the pants THERE IS NO DISCERNIBLE
WAY TO SHUT THIS SO-CALLED "FEATURE" OFF!!.he's scoured the web, and
there IS a BIOS update/patch that's supposed to work...but guess
what?...its only for CERTAIN models of XPS 13's!so he spent upwards of
$1500...for headaches?...and its not like this is something new...his XPS
is from late 2015we're in 2018!...and STILL the Dell devs have no "fix"
for this?i wonder if they have enough money to cover the amount of
lawsuits they'll get hit with for people damaging their EYES using their
device?...

* Sorry for the rant!...too much coffee and not enough sleep...

Re: XPS 13 (9360)

2018-01-06 Thread Sean Smith
Dell just announced an updated (new) XPS 13 but the older (9360) series
are still available- for a time?

I've got two of the XPS13 9360:  i3, 4gb / 128ssd with Win10 preloaded
and  i5 8gb 245ssd with Ubuntu preloaded.  I run/have run Linux on
both.  I even tried the previous gen XPS13 developer model with the
proprietary WiFi and Ubuntu preload but returned it because of the
enormous hassle with the (previous) wifi.

The XPS13 is a great machine for running Linux.  I've run Debian and
Debian based distros, CentOS, Solus and Fedora on mine.  All the
hardware works "out of the box" with the notable exception of Debian
which require non-free drivers for the "Killer" brand Wifi.  I just use
the "unofficial" Debian non-free iso images to install.

All versions of Fedora; 24, 25, 26 and 27, that I've tried work
wonderfully on the XPS13.  I would, however, consider getting one with
Win10 if you catch one on sale or at a discount (i've never seen the
"Developer/Linux" models discounted).  You can do a Clonzilla image of
the Win10 preload, then blow it away and install Linux.

One really nice thing about Dell's latest machines, XPS, OptiPlex,
Latitude, etc., is that you can update the BIOS from the BIOS boot
prompt.  There's no need to boot into an OS to update the BIOS, just
download the BIOS update file (an .exe) to a FAT flash drive and the
BIOS has it's own, built in, update engine.

HTH,

Sean

Re: XPS 13 (9360)

2018-01-04 Thread Go Canes
My wife's XPS 13 (not sure which sub-model) runs Fedora. Only issue
was a specific range of kernels that broke the screen brightness
settings (long since fixed). Unfortunately, we have to replace it
because it will no longer charge the battery, and all the indications
are that it is a motherboard issue. We will probably get the current
XPS 13.

Yes, indeed, this is the so-called developer edition and tends to run about
$100 cheaper than the one with the Windows tax. I got that four years ago and
stripped off the Ubuntu and off we went. I am still pleased with this purchase
(in June 2013).

I have been running Fedora since Fedora 19-20 on my trusty XPS13. Have been
doing so for the past four and a half years, in fact this e-mail is written on
that machine running F27. No problems at all. Same story for two of my students
who bought their laptops two years ago upon seeing my positive experience
(getting rid of their over-priced, useless and deceptive Macbook Airs in the
process).

off buying one of those models if they exist in Singapore (you might
