Could be just the meta-data that says you can't modify it.

That's a completely separate thing. To remove a file you only need
write permission on the directory, not on the file itself. You still
haven't said what the file's permission (mode) is.

No, this does not have any effect. 

However, saving as .doc and then opening that and saving that as .docx works. 
Not sure what I am losing in the process, though.

But I can remove the file, using rm.


However, saving as .doc and then opening that and saving that as .docx works.
