did some research. I think I fixed the issue.
My problem was two things:
1) From the mater node I made sure i could do a password-less ssh connection
to the other nodes via; IP address of the nodes, host

The command hangs with no message or error message until i hit "control + z".
Then i have the same error message as before.

which version of Open MPI are you using ? how many hosts in your hostsfile ?
The error message suggests this could be a bug within Open MPI, and a
potential workaround for you would be to try
mpirun -np 84 - -hostfile hostsfile --mca routed direct ./openmpi_hello.c
