Indeed, oVirt does not have "snapshot trees".

Best workaround I came up with is Right-click a snapshot and choose 'Clone'.
This will create a new VM from (a COW copy of) this snapshot.

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot of the Self-Hosted Engine

2018-03-28 Thread FERNANDO FREDIANI
Hello Sven and all.

Yes storage does have the snapshot function and could be possibility be
used, but I was wondering a even easier way through the oVirt Node CLI or
something similar that can use the qcow2 image snapshot to do that with the
Self-Hosted Engine in Global Maintenance.

I used to run the oVirt Engine in a Libvirt KVM Virtual Machine in a
separate Host and it has always been extremely handy to have this feature.
There has been times where the upgrade was not successfully and just
turning off the VM, starting it from snapshot saved my day.

Fernando

We are using a disk lease to prevent split brains, AFAIK snapshots are not
compatible with disk leases.

I do not think so - I do not think anything changed since this:

http://lists.ovirt.org/pipermail/users/2016-November/044103.html

I agree it sounds like a useful thing to have. Not sure how hard it
can be to implement it. Feel free to open an RFE bz.

Basically, we'll have to:

1. Make sure everything continues to work sensibly - engine/vdsm do
the right things, ha agent works as expected, etc.

2. Provide means to start the vm from a snapshot, and/or revert to a
snapshot. This is going to be quite ugly, because it will have to
duplicate in ovirt-hosted-engine-setup/-ha functionality that already
exists in the engine, because at that point the engine is not
available to assist with this.

I found this while I've try to migrate a storage-domain between two

Because, I didn't import that vm from the storage domain, I did an

The VM started successfully, but the disk that contain a snapshot did

So. I have a disk with snapshot. Or - really - I just think that is a
 snapshot.
It was attached originally to a VM (with other two disks, that is not have
 snapshot) I did a detach-attach-storage procedure, but after attach, - I
 don't
know why - ovirt could not import the VM and disks from this (ovirt said

not possible). After this I just wondered, I will make a new VM with same

and I will copy the images (really just rename) from original to recreated.

It was partial success because the VM can boot, but the disk, where there
 is a
snapshot I can't read the LVM table. I see just it seems to corrupt.
Now this disk in a very interested state: I can see the snapshot datas
 from the
 vm as raw disk.
I think Ovirt don't know that is a snapshotted image and attach to VM as
 raw
 disk.

So my really question, how can I add this disk image as good to ovirt?

Please help me, it is very important me.:(

2017-11-16 Thread Demeter Tibor
Hi,
Sorry for my bad English:(

Ovirt could not import my VM and disks from original storge-domain. It is an
NFS share on a server.
Then I create an another NFS share on same storage and attached to ovirt as new
storgae domain.
At this step I've created a new VM on new storage-domain with same disks.
(three think provisioned, 100GB, 60GB and 13TB disks). It was necessary,
because ovirt cant import my original disks and VM from the re-attached storage
domain.
Finally I renamed my old disks from old storage domain to new on new storgae
domain (it was possible because are there on same file system on nfs server)
At this moment only two virtual disk working fine. The 100 and 60GB disks does
working fine, but the 13TB is not. It has a snapshot. Or not? Is it a snapshot
or not?

My problem is inside VM I see the content as raw disk. I thing Ovirt don't want
to use it as a snapshotted image. Or what ?

Thank you.

I found this while I've try to migrate a storage-domain between two

Because, I didn't import that vm from the storage domain, I did an another
similar VM with exactly same sized thin-provisioned disks. I have renamed,
 copied to here my originals.

The VM started successfully, but the disk that contain a snapshot did not
recognized by the os. I can see the whole disk as raw. (disk id, format in
ovirt, filenames of images, etc) . I think ovirt don't know that is a
snapshotted image and use as raw. Is it possible?
I don't see any snapshot in snapshots. Also I have try to list snapshots
 with
qemu-img info and qemu-img snapshot -l , but it does not see any snapshots
 in
 the image.

Really, I don't know how is possible this.

Hi Tibor,

Can you please explain this part: "After this I just wondered, I will make
a new VM with same disk and I will copy the images (really just rename)
from original to recreated."
What were the exact steps you took?

Thanks

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot or not?

2017-11-16 Thread Demeter Tibor
Hi,

Thank you for your reply.

So. I have a disk with snapshot. Or - really - I just think that is a snapshot.
It was attached originally to a VM (with other two disks, that is not have
snapshot) I did a detach-attach-storage procedure, but after attach, - I don't
know why - ovirt could not import the VM and disks from this (ovirt said it is
not possible). After this I just wondered, I will make a new VM with same disk
and I will copy the images (really just rename) from original to recreated.

It was partial success because the VM can boot, but the disk, where there is a
snapshot I can't read the LVM table. I see just it seems to corrupt.
Now this disk in a very interested state: I can see the snapshot datas from the
vm as raw disk.
I think Ovirt don't know that is a snapshotted image and attach to VM as raw
disk.

So my really question, how can I add this disk image as good to ovirt?

Please help me, it is very important me.:(

Thanks in advance,

Have a nice day,

Tibor

Hi Tibor,

I am not sure I completely understand the scenario.

You have a VM with two disks and then you create a snapshot including the
two disks?
Before creating the snapshot, did the VM recognize the two disks?

well, yes, but you can not multiselect 20 snapshots from 10 different VMs
and press "remove" in the current UI. I believe this is what the question

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot removal vs selinux enforced

2017-09-25 Thread Lionel Caignec
I reply myself if it can help somemone.
I found a solution with audit2allow/audit2why creating a policy containing this
:
type systemd_machined_t;
type svirt_t;
type fixed_disk_device_t;
class blk_file write;
class dir search;
}

It seems to work, and i can keep my host in selinux enforced.

Objet: [ovirt-users] Snapshot removal vs selinux enforced

Hi,

i have a problem with selinux enforced.
When i tried to live remove a snapshot the operation failed . After some
headache i found the problem source : selinux.
When i "setenfore 0" the removal task work, when i "setenforce 1" removal task
failed.

log from audit.log:
  vc: denied {write} for pid = 28360 tmptext = system_u: object_r :
fixed_disk_device_t: s0 tclass = blk_file

I'm with RHEL 7.4 and ovirt 4.1, is it some specific configuration to do?.

Thanks for help.

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot self-hosted engine?

2016-11-18 Thread Derek Atkins
Hi Martin,

Keep in mind this is a single host.. so.. is there a command line
operation I can run from the host to snapshot the running engine VM? Then
if then update fails I can revert (by command line) the running VM from
before the update. I don't mind getting my fingers dirty if I have to
script it.

I've used the "engine-backup" tool, but frankly IMHO a snapshot is a
better way to handle an immediate update, rather than having to completely
re-install the VM and restore from backup. This operation is exactly why
snapshots exist. :)

Thanks,

-derek

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot deletion failure

2016-09-28 Thread Ala Hino
Hi Marcelo,

This error indicates that the image you are trying to delete doesn't exist.
When do you get this error? When running Live Merge or Live Storage
Migration (LSM)?

Please note that we fixed in LSM area where the VM went down while we tried
to delete the auto-generated snapshot. See
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/1368203 .

This is a bug, I have opened the following BZ to track it:

  The "creation_status" resources don't work with V3

What could be the reason for this error?

@Nir,

that looks like some issue in VDSM please have a look

This means there was a previous attempt to merge, and the block job
did not complete yet.

Engine should detect that there is an active block job and wait until
it completes.

This is probably engine bug, please file a bug and attach complete vdsm and
engine logs.

Ala, can you look at this?

This means there was a previous attempt to merge, and the block job
did not complete yet.

Engine should detect that there is an active block job and wait until
it completes.

This is probably engine bug, please file a bug and attach complete vdsm and
engine logs.

Ala, can you look at this?

Hi oVirt List

We have the problem, that two of our VM's have "Locked" snapshots
and we
can't go forward. From 10 VM's which we move from one store to
another,
we have problems with 5 of them to delete the snapshots. But with a
lot
of luck, the snapshot was always on the dedicated Swap-Disk, so we
just

have to remove the whole disk and create it again as new.

Because we replace all the filers, we have to move the VM's
arround. The
move itself runns fine, but deleting the snapshots doesn't work
sometimes.

I found a lot about our problem, but I can't find any solution, which
works an our environment.

Our setup:
- 3 Solaris filer with NFS exports for the hosts for the vm-images
- 8 hosts (oVirt 3.6 / Centos 7.2.1511)
- The engine host is located outside of the DC, connected via VPN

At the moment, one of the "problem-VM" is productive, the other should
become productive in the next days, so we focus us to the 2nd VM,
because we can play arround with them. The other one is startet up,
but

i have no idea, what happens, when i shut them down...

This is the status today of VM, which is not productive at the moment:
- VM Status: Down
- Snapshots OK: 2
- Snapshots Locked: 1
- In the snapshot tab, everything is grayed out (Create, Preview,
Commit, Undo etc.)
- No active tasks are displayed

Error message when i try to start the VM:
"Cannot run VM. The VM is performing an operation on a Snapshot.
Please

wait for the operation to finish, and try again."
This often produces to me too. The only way I found to resolve it is to
restart engine, you may try this, it has no impact on the host and vms.

Something about the history of this VM:
1. We start the disk move from filer1 to filer3, totaly 4 drives,

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot is "Locked" - Can't do anything with the VM

2016-05-03 Thread Ivo Rütsche

Salü Markus

Yes, i saw also some postings arround, but no solution and all of them
was a bit different than our situation.

The VM is always responsible, as long as we don't shut it down.

I need to have a focus on it, but I think when I do it like this:

delete all snapshots
moving 1st Disk -> delete snapshot
moving 2nd Disk -> delete snapshot
moving 3rd Disk -> delete snapshot

I don't get in troubles, than I move all the disk and then I remove all
the snapshots.

Maybe I can deliver more logs to help to solve the problem?

Betreff: [ovirt-users] Snapshot is "Locked" - Can't do anything with the VM

Hi oVirt List

We have the problem, that two of our VM's have "Locked" snapshots and we
can't go forward. From 10 VM's which we move from one store to another,
we have problems with 5 of them to delete the snapshots. But with a lot
of luck, the snapshot was always on the dedicated Swap-Disk, so we just
have to remove the whole disk and create it again as new.

Because we replace all the filers, we have to move the VM's arround. The
move itself runns fine, but deleting the snapshots doesn't work sometimes.

The other one is startet up, but
i have no idea, what happens, when i shut them down...

This is the status today of VM, which is not productive at the moment:
- VM Status: Down
- Snapshots OK: 2
- Snapshots Locked: 1
- In the snapshot tab, everything is grayed out (Create, Preview,
Commit, Undo etc.)
- No active tasks are displayed

Error message when i try to start the VM:
"Cannot run VM. The VM is performing an operation on a Snapshot. Please
wait for the operation to finish, and try again."

Something about the history of this VM:
1. We start the disk move from filer1 to filer3, totaly 4 drives,
everything was fine
2. Deleting snapshots, i think one or two runns fine
3. Deleting the 2nd or 3rd snapshot runs two days without an end
4. Rebooting the Engine
5. No task anymore in the Tasks list
6. The status of the snapshot is "Locked", die Disk of this snapshot
becoms "Illegal" and red
7. Shutdown the VM - no luck, i can't start it again --> "Cannot run
VM. The VM is performing an operation on a Snapshot. Please wait for the
operation to finish, and try again."
8. We move the disk back from filer3 to the filer1
9. The status of the snapshot is "Locked", die Disk of this snapshot
becoms "OK" and green
...but i can't delete the snapshot or starting the VM :(

Today, i copy the image files to a dedicated KVM host, which is not
involved in the oVirt environment and i merge the image manualy together:
qemu-img convert -p -f qcow2 804ffcc3-446f-4c56-ba99-ab90c7951a6f -O raw
Merged1

I mount the image and everything fine, all the changes from the last two
days are now in a base image. I try to remove the whole disk in oVirt,
but i still got the error message, that i have to wait. So for me, the
next step is to create a new VM and migrate everything manualy, this
will work, but can't be the solution for the other VM, which is
productive and it have the same problem.

Re: [ovirt-users] snapshot deleting

2015-06-02 Thread Allon Mureinik
It's not a bug, it was just not implemented yet.
It will probably be on our radar towards 4.0.

 Hello,
my question is about deleting default snapshots generated via disk
 moving between storages.
The snapshot called Auto-generated for Live Storage Migration is NOT

I just wanted to remove the snapshots in ovirt... That's all... And now
they are locked. Without the possibility to remove, reboot the vm or cancel

So I'm stuck... How can I change the status of the snapshot in the db, so
that at least I can remove the VM? And what could be the impact , worst

Re: [ovirt-users] Snapshot deletion gone horribly wrong - Urgent

2014-11-01 Thread Stefan Wendler
After exporting some unused VMs and deleting other snapshots afterwards
I'm back to 500GB. But the partially deleted 1TB Snapshot is still there
and needs to be cleaned up.

Is there a clean way to cleanup partially deleted/migrated snapshots
without loosing more disk space? What I don't understand is what is
there to migrate, if it is the last snapshot anyway? Shouldn't the
Actual VM-disks be in a consistent state with or without the
snapshots? Or asked another way ... are there documents with an in-depth
description on how snapshots work in oVirt?

Cheers,
Stefan

The snapshot to delete is the only snapshot for this VM.

I started snapshot deletion a couple of hours ago. ovirt then started
filling up the store. I'm sure it happened because of the snapshot
deletion. I have seen this many times when deleting snapshots.
Now I have a couple of KBytes left on the store and the snapshot is
marked as broken. And I cannot delete the snapshot because of not enough
free space. Is there a way to alter the database and then delete the
 snapshot files by hand?

I know the files that are the snapshots and could delete them but then
the vm wouldn't start because it is missing the files.

 Cheers,

 Hi Shanil,

Preview/Undo actions can be invoked from VM context.
 I.e.:
 /api/vms/{vm_id}/preview_snapshot
 /api/vms/{vm_id}/undo_snapshot

These actions are supported only on versions 3.4,
in older versions, use 'restore' (which is 'preview + commit'):
 /api/vms/{vm_id}/snapshots/{snapshot_id}/restore

To clone a VM from snapshot, POST to /api/vms :
 vm
   ...
   snapshots
 snapshot id={snapshot_id}/
   /snapshots
   ...
 /vm

a disk == volume

an image is more like a template in ovirt.
you can instantiate multiple VMs, thinly or cloned from a template.
one difference is that a template has both the image (via the disks in
it), as well as the default VM config, while in openstack an image
doesn't have a config associated with it, as the config comes from the
flavors. in 3.5, ovirt adds ability to use instance types (flavors) on
top of the template mechanism (and for plan VMs as well).

you can 'create snapshot' on a VM (for all its disks), or since 3.4, on
a specific disk.

 NFS is wipe_after_delete=true always.
so delete of snapshot will merge the data to upper level image + zero in
on the data which is why this is taking a long time.

I double checked this and I was very much surprised by this finding!

We need a bz right away, Dafna can file it? Thanks!
