Hi, It's great that you are thinking about writing a Photo application since we are missing a photo gallery and I'm sure lots of people in the community would like one.
There is this page on design.xwiki.org http://design.xwiki.org/xwiki/bin/view/Proposal/PhotoApplication that list related extensions for photo album and also list some possible requirements, not sure if it's what you are needing.
