Re: [xwiki-users] Upgrading xwiki

2016-12-15 Thread Mahomed Hussein
You should probably do a full-backup as per the backup instructions and then
let the upgrade wizard handle the conversion/transfer for you. If you are
installing a new instance of XWiki and want to restore the old files/documents,
then you need to say that so people can help you.

As for "what is merge copy", Vincent's response was very clear. If you don't
understand what "merge" means, then this link will help -
https://lmgtfy.com/?q=define%3A+merge

Basically it means to combine the old configuration files and new configuration
files. You do this "manually" by comparing the differences between the old and
the new files and ending up with a new configuration that has your custom
changes from the old file (where relevant) plus the new settings from the new
file. In most cases though if you are doing an in-place upgrade, the wizard
does this for you (or at least makes it easier).

That being said, I agree with Cuong Hoang, you probably need to get someone
with a bit more knowledge to do this for you.

Kind regards,

Thanks Vincent for fast reply. I didn't clear this statement.

"you should not copy over the configuration files exactly since the new version

If i can't copy over the configuration files exactly, so how do i copy the
configuration files?.
I am trying to copy the files in older version and paste it in newer version
seems it is not copying and nothings change in newer version, that's confusing
me.

I have import a lot of document in older version and now want to back up and
insert all doc to newer version. How do i make it works? Why, after i copy the
web-INF files and paste it in new version, nothings change..

Please advice.

Hmm.. if you ask what it's meant by merge than I guess you probably are not
in software development or system administration, in which case I suggest
you contact your system administrator or an experienced software developer,
they can help you do the installation/upgrading. Regards.

It says:

Then copy the configuration files and the permanent directory from the old
installation to the new one. Ideally you should not copy over the configuration
files exactly since the new version could have added new configuration options
and thus ideally you should do a merge instead of a pure copy. Another strategy
is to use the new configuration files, not copy over the old configuration
files and instead manually edit the new configuration to make the same changes
as you have may done before (If you've never touched the configuration files
then there's nothing to do obviously!).
“

What is not clear? It’s pretty clear to me: "you should not copy over the

configuration options”.

FYI I’ve added a way to automated a bit the merge but I fear this may confuse
you even more:

Hi Mbas! I started to write this message weeks ago, and only now find time
enough to finish and send it. I hope it still makes some sense for you
or/and anybody else.

I'm afraid, as usual, I've not an easy answer for your question but I am,
and I'm also sure many others, interested in how you are going to face the
process. Migration is always a hard task as, very frequently, plain old
wikis are full with ad hoc not easily replaceable/migrable solutions.

Some years ago XWiki guys helped me to move a 1.x XWiki installation to a
XWiki Enterprise 2.4.30451 server and, since 7.x appeared, I've a peding
upgrade from that 2.4.30451 to a new 7.x server.

During the last months I've been documenting the process to upgrade within
the 7.x series, and now I feel more or less confortable with it.

Here some notes I would like to share even thought they are still kind of a
mess...

http://portal.idisantiago.es/xwiki/bin/download/ICT/UpgradingXWiki/upgradingXWiki.txt

I'm not sure if I'll be able to move to parameters all variable items and
construct a script, but I'll keep trying!

Also, I'm afraid any migration/upgrade process is very related with the
RDBMS, the application server and the web server (if any) of each
installation. My take now is that in a XWiki migration from an old version
to a brand new installation we have to design/follow a strategy more than
expect to have a fully equivalent upgraded installation.

For instance, I would like to:

1) As users and groups are the core of the system, I would like to move
my old XWiki community, the one installed in the 2.4.30451 server, to the
brand new 7.x box, get all users authenticating in the 7.x box and having
access with this login to the legacy 2.4.30451 box.
2) Once I get this done, I'll frozen my 2.4.30451 community and only allow
it to growth in the 7.x installation.
3) Contents will be exported/migrated on a per-demand/per-opportunity
basis.

While 2) and 3) are easily implementable, I''ve no idea about how to reach
1). Any comment, criticism or idea will be more than welcome!

Thanks in advance,

Ricardo

My main question is how to import all the old content to the new xwiki?
I have a postgres dump of 11GB from the old xwiki. Should I use it in the

Is it the best way considering how far the versions are?

You should go directly to 1.6.1. Only the most recent XAR must be

Re: [xwiki-users] Upgrading XWiki Enterprise From 1.2.2 to 1.6.1

2008-11-25 Thread BSayatovic
I recently upgraded from a 1.1 milestone to 1.6.0 in one fell swoop.

I did an export from my old installation, installed the new version in a
separate location, tweaked the out-of-the-box config (I kept notes on what
I customized last time so I could re-do it) and then did a selective
import.

I did have some troubles. My exported XAR was huge and the 1.6.0 VM kept
running out of heap on import. I ended up excluding history (*sniff*) and
also manually deleting unwanted items from the XAR, as well as increasing
the heap size.

But in the end, it worked!

Brian.

Nope, global.vm is by no means deprecated! But it is now stored in the

I think this path could go in a FAQ entry. Perhaps it does not make
sense to propose a way of updating from the zipped standalone
distribution running on Jetty/hhsqldb to the war one. The standalone
release is intended to entry level users, and it would be advisable to
move to the war distribution running on whatever servlet container and a
relational database like MySQL or Oracle. But you have your contents in
the standalone version... what database are you planning to run with
  XWiki war?

I'll make a post in the FAQ.
As for the database, I'm not sure, since I'm not responsible for the
server and don't know yet what database and servlets are availabe.
Will try to find out...

This is not a good idea. Albatross has changed a lot since 1.2.2 times
(better, the pair Albatross/Toucan :-), so I think you MUST use the new
release. I will be glad to help you to recover your customized behavior,
but first of all we need to work out the collapsed/expanded panels issue.

  What do you think?

I think you're right, even with the collapsed panels problem solved.
Just have to find a time when I can allow myself to break the layout
of the wiki. Even though the page its in the very early construction
phase, I have couple of co-workers who also make contributions.

So my first question regarding the albatross skin is the following:
Since the global.vm file is missing, and at least a few of the
properties it defined are now elsewhere (such as colors.css), while
others are not, should I create a new global.vm or is it entirely
deprecated?
In my case, I want to modify the url of the main logo, which was
defined in global.vm as

Touché! :-) Good point. It was me myself who misread your message.

I've once downloaded and used a zipped distribution to debug a problem
with MySQL (following Vincent advice) and all what I did was to remove
the folder of the hsqldb database (I don't remember the name and some
xwiki.org sections are now down for maintenance, but it was easy to
locate) and configure hibernate.cfg.xml accordingly.

So I am *guessing* that all you have to do is to bring down your servlet
container, create a backup copy of the whole /xwiki directory structure
(jsut in case!), put in place the new zip contents, copy your current
database to the new location and start the container again.

Please, let me knows if this helped. It could be helpful for others if
we could create a FAQ about this (if it doesn't existe yet!) Thanks.

Re: [xwiki-users] upgrading xwiki 1.2.2

2008-03-13 Thread Joao Henrique Silva Santos
Hi.
I've upgraded the xwiki from 1.2.2 to 1.3 final using the zip distributions
All I did was:

1 - copy the entire directory to a backup folder
2 - unzip the 1.3 zip file xwiki-enterprise-hsqldb-1.3.zip
3 - deleted the newly created database ($XWIKI_HOME/database), and
replaced it with the backed up database folder.

Then I wanted to implement the changes I had made on the 1.2.2
albatross skin, but since I could not find where to make some changes
(namely how to change the url of the wiki icon, which was defined on
global.vm), I decided instead to:

4 - rename albatross (in webapps/xwiki/skins) to albatrossORIGINAL;
5 - copy to the skins folder the albatross folder from my backed up
1.2.2 xwiki

It is now running and so far it seems everything is fine, including user list.

Joao

But you have your contents in
the standalone version... what database are you planning to run with
XWiki war?
Then I wanted to implement the changes I had made on the 1.2.2
albatross skin, but since I could not find where to make some changes
(namely how to change the url of the wiki icon, which was defined on
 global.vm), I decided instead to:

 4 - rename albatross (in webapps/xwiki/skins) to albatrossORIGINAL;
5 - copy to the skins folder the albatross folder from my backed up
 1.2.2 xwiki

This is not a good idea. Albatross has changed a lot since 1.2.2 times
(better, the pair Albatross/Toucan :-), so I think you MUST use the new
release. I will be glad to help you to recover your customized behavior,
but first of all we need to work out the collapsed/expanded panels issue.

What do you think?

Saúde,

Ricardo

Hi Joao,

 Hi.

I have installed an XWiki 1.2.2 through a XWiki Enterprise ZIP, and
now want to upgrade to 1.3.
From the documentation, it seems that easy upgrades of the wiki
require the WAR installation, which I have not done. Do I have to
export my current wiki into a WAR (if so, how can I do it?), or is it
 done through a different method?

Have you checked out Upgrading an XWiki Installation in the following
location?
