Yes, the component build is expected to work for every version, and our
buildbot thinks it does:

The component build is also the default in Debug mode, which most V8
developers compile/use every day.

Thank you, I'm not completely out of the weeds yet, but most of my
libraries are now building with your tip "use_custom_libcxx=false".
