Re: [Vala] Vala logo

2012-01-05 Thread Tobias Bernard
That's my hope too. If Jürg doesn't have the time to be involved in the
voting process, he could let some kind of community manager organize the
voting and make a decision on which he then has a veto. So if he likes the
community's decision, the time he needs to put into this is close to zero
and if he doesn't, he'd just need to tell me what he'd like to change and I
could make the necessary changes to it.
If nobody else wants to do it, I'd also organize it myself.

What do you think?

Tobias

 Tobias,

I really hope someone can make your work official. We had so much talk
about this already a few months ago. In the end I think Jürg would
have the last say on the logo. Also I don't think there is a community
manager for this project, besides Jürg. Seeing that there are over
500+ bugs many that need to be confirmed or are new makes me think
something like this may be put on the back burner for a while.

Maybe it would be worth while to see if its possible to have a
 community manager arise?

As someone said in an earlier thread:

To me it is about flying above all the nightmare complexity of pages

The core values a Vala brand should communicate are lightness, ease,
freedom and openness. I think wings symbolize these values quite well.

It's never too late for feedback :)

But as I already wrote here on the mailing list, this voting won't be about
the VALA text but about the symbol. This text is on the proposals as an
example, but it will be dicussed later and there will be a separate voting
on it.
For now, if you don't like it, ignore it ;)

Probably far too late in the process to come back and comment on this
but I have a few general comments.

I really like the concept of wings etc and think of the logo marks,
all but #4 are really very strong, to me #4 is the weakest and is only
 good.

However, I really dislike the font used for VALA.

I totally get that by reducing the number of strokes required to form
the letters you are trying to evoke simplicity and lightness as shared
qualities. For me it actually suggests a different, less accurate set
 of ideas:
Only a few basic tools - 4 unique strokes build the entire word
Very direct and angular - fast yes, elegant no.

These would seem more to be the qualities of a low level language
(assembler or c) rather than a modern, high level language. Vala
provides lot's of tools and high level objects to it's users that
should let us express ourselves in a much more elegant fashion.

Appreciate these comments may be coming at the least helpful time and
regardless the outcome will clearly be to a very high standard.

[Vala] Vala logo symbol voting

2011-08-27 Thread Tobias Bernard
Hi

Since there were no further comments on the logo drafts, I thought I'd
propose to vote on the logo symbol.
here http://ubuntuone.com/p/1DBL/'s a revised version of the logo symbol
part of my proposal document http://ubuntuone.com/p/1AW8/ (alternative
download http://tobias.bluestain.net/wp-content/uploads/2011/08/vala01.pdf
)

I don't know how you organize votings here, so I have some questions on
that:
What is needed to start an official voting?
Is there a some kind of a leader who offcially announces votings?
Who is allowed to vote and how many people need to vote to take a decision?

After thinking a bit more about it, I changed certain poposals, deleted
others and added new ones. Of course I tried to always keep your feedback in
mind. So here's the changes in detail:

1) Putting the symbol inside a circle for the main logo is a bad idea. In
some cases the symbol could be used this way, but as a variant, not as the
main one. This is why I deleted all proposals inside a circle.

2) The symbolism of ancient warfare is hard to understand. Probably too
hard to be understood instantly by most people, so I put that proposal away
too.

3) The simplicity of the first proposal (horizontal wing) was liked by many,
so I added a similar symbol with a simple vertical wing.

4) Thanks to XY, I used your idea for proposal 04, however I am still not
sure if
 a) The V is readable
 b) The wing is recognizable

I thought I'd let the community decide this by voting ;)

I'm looking forward to hear from you, so the votings can begin.
Of course, any kind of feedback is welcome and any changes can be made to
the current proposals.

 the
graphics you've made to be very professional. I really like the
 wing
and definitely prefer the 2 tone graphic over glass effects.

I was only wondering if it would be possible to see the wings with
another text graphic below it. The vala with the sharp edges kind
of turns me off. Vala is more of a rounded and soft word with lots
of vowels. It rolls off the tongue. The graphic I see in your
logos, however, expresses a lot of consonants and pointedness. To
me, the current text graphic contradicts the forgiving and welcoming
feel of the vala language. To me, vala takes the snagging edges out
of programming. It's a more human and organic language, less
machine.

Would it be possible to round off the points on the text graphic?
I'm not sure it would be better, but I think it would be interesting
to see. For sure, it will set other things in the logo out of
balance, but it just might fit the wings better.

Is there a some kind of a leader who offcially announces votings?

After thinking a bit more about it, I changed certain poposals, deleted
others and added new ones. Of course I tried to always keep your feedback
 in

  1) Putting the symbol inside a circle for the main logo is a bad idea. In
some cases the symbol could be used this way, but as a variant, not as
 the
main one. This is why I deleted all proposals inside a circle.

  2) The symbolism of ancient warfare is hard to understand. Probably too
hard to be understood instantly by most people, so I put that proposal
 away
  too.

  3) The simplicity of the first proposal (horizontal wing) was liked by
 many,
so I added a similar symbol with a simple vertical wing.

  4) Thanks to XY, I used your idea for proposal 04, however I am still not
  sure if
   a) The V is readable
   b) The wing is recognizable

I thought I'd let the community decide this by voting ;)

 hi

Thank you all for your feedback!

 @ Luca:
I wouldn't use the tango palette, first of all because I personally don't
like it really much ;) and second becuase it doesn't fit really well with
the values the whole brand identity aims to communicate (freedom,
 lightness,
simplicity etc). I don't see why blue should be old school in general, and
as explained in the pdf, I think it fits really well with the ideas behind
 Vala.
However, if it is decided to go for tango colors, in some way that could
work as well, I guess :)

 @ Rastersoft
Looks interesting, I'll try something like that. The problem is probably
 to
keep the V readable. We'll see..

 @ Rob
Of course, once a logo has been chosen, there will be many different
versions for different sizes and purposes, among those very likely also a
horizontal one, but it's way too early to think about such details. I
 placed
the symbols above the text for all proposals because it worked well with
 the
sheet format, but this does in no way mean the final logo is going to
 behave
 this way.

 @ Joseph
That (or a similar) slogan could be used also as a logo subtitle. like it
 :)

As explained in the pdf I think a subtitle for the logo would be nice. So
 if
anyone has an idea how the essence of Vala could be expressed in short
words, please make suggestions! (example: Ruby - a programmer's best
 friend)

 Here's what we currently have:
 - Vala - a simple yet powerful programming language
 - Vala - gives you vings (or maybe spread your wings, so it'd be less
 similar to the redbull slogan^^)

I recommend everyone to also read the initial part of the document, so you
can understand better where the logos come from and why I did things the
 way
 I did.
Of course, suggestions of any kind are highly appreaciated ;)

 kind regards

+1 for Vings#4, it's a great icon and it has the good aspect of actually
forming a very clear V with the wings.

Really nice work Tobias!

I think what Luca might be getting at here with 'too high' could be
addressed with a horizontal layout. Horizontal would probably work
better in a webpage context. 01's wing followed by the typographic logo
could look very cool =)

I like 1 and 3. I like the incorporation of V into #3.

While I think the muted color palette is very professional (suit and

fresh and vibrant.

The logo text is great, but I dislike the logo symbols... What about a
V letter in speed, like the feathers in the first wing? Something
like this:

http://www.rastersoft.com/vala_fast_v.png

I'm not a good graphic designer, but I think you can get the idea...

 Hi

Some time ago I checked out the Vala Wikipedia page after reading
about it on elementaryos.org and discovered that there was no logo.
After googling it, I got to the mailing list, where I read that you
 are currently seeking a logo

I thought I might be able to help.

So I made a rough draft for a Vala brand identity which can be
downloaded here http://ubuntuone.com/p/1AW8/. I'd love to hear
feedback, criticism or anything else ;)

ps. If you want to check my design skills, take a look at my

I agree, except perhaps for the one on the right-hand side at the bottom.
(The blue parallelepiped with the green triangle).

   - - it is simple.
   - - It suggests both a robust, simple geometric shape and a stylised
bamboo (a bamboo stem with a leaf).
   - - it says Vala in the sense that it coveys both a sense of rigour and
a sense of organic growth (in one word pragmatism).
   - - It is asymmetric, yet balanced (very Zen).

Perhaps with different colors and sightly different balance between the
shape of the two components, it could look really cool.

Serge.

Interesting. I think it could get more vibrant using the tango palette and

Logo #10 looks great to me. Although, on the bottom the darker green band is
somewhat distracting. I wouldn't take it away, but maybe do a gradient or
something like to reduce the distraction.

The green seems to work well, and the circled V also seems to work nicely.

I also like #2. Its very distinctive, and looks good. Somewhat less going on
and more concise.

2011-07-29 Thread Bernd Nicklas

Hello,

Vala logos no 1, 2, 7 and 8 look (because of their angles and line
lengths) a little bit like super hero and therefore (in my opinion,
please do not take this personal) a little cheap and unreliable.

Vala logo 3, 4, 5, 6, 9 and 10 look more symmetric and round, therefore
more impressive and reliable.

Vala logo 3 and 4 have warmer colors than the other logos, therefore
warmer impression. Blue usually is interpreted as reliable. Green as
natural. Red as warm, eye-catching (signal color) and a little ominous.
Usually a good mix. Think of google or picasa...

Vala logo 10 looks natural and a little bit cold.

My favorites are 3 and 4.

Only a personal opinion.

Re: [Vala] Vala Logo Showcase

2011-07-29 Thread Joseph Montanez
The really fat V, 1,2,7,8 makes me think of http://www.ogre3d.org/

I really like logo #4, but I think just a solid dark gray color is
fine. Its cheaper to print and works with letting anyone use whatever
color they want for integration purposes.
