Hi All,

I've just submitted a first RFC version of the vboxguest and
vboxsf to the upstream linux kernel:

https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/8/11/400
https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/8/11/398
https://lkml.org/lkml/2017/8/11/399

I've Cc-ed Knut and Michael, but not vbox-dev because the
mainline kernel devs don't like having a closed list on Cc
and vbox-dev does not handle large patches well.

I'm aware that VirtualBox plans to keep using its own
cross-platform of the driver, but I do invite you to take
a look at the submitted version, it really is a lot simpler
then the cross-platform driver and a lot smaller too, around
80KB for the vboxguest.ko file vs 450KB for the cross-platform
version.

Given that it is much simpler you may want to use it upstream
too for new enough Linux guests and then overtime as you drop
support for older guest, fully move over to this driver for
Linux guests. Then you can remove support for Linux from the
cross-platform driver which should allow to simplify it in
various places.

Regards,

Hans
