I've done a few qmail installs before, but this is my first time trying
vpopmail. I'm sure this question has been addressed before but I couldn't
find it in the mailing list archives or in any of the documentation so
please accept my apologies.

I have been running vpopmail for quites some time now, without problems. I
am running purely virtual, with several domains, including our own. Upon
upgrading to 4.9.10, Virtual Domains cease to work. here is what I am
getting with 4.9.10:
Sep 27 10:52:53 ns1 vpopmail[5283]: vchkpw: setgid()
Your best bet would be if you went with this would be smtp-auth. It's
pretty simple to setup now (compared to how it was)
