My solution to not having to use user%virtualdomain.com was to only offer
web-based email. I use Squirrel-Mail which I have modified the php to
determine how to login and which %virtualdomain to use based on the domain
they typed to get there. So basically every user types

Hi,
Sorry to jump in on this discussion... My rcpthosts file contains all the
'hosts' I receive mail for (as yours does) but my locals file only contains
the 'real' machine names - ie. mail that goes to real users, rather than
virtual ones. Don't know if that'll help, but it's a difference whic
Yes, we use qmailadmin to manage our accounts. We had a dns error and we
had to resetup the accounts we did a vdeldomain and vadddomain and then this
problem arose. Below is the rcpthosts / locals files if I'm understanding
your correctly to send anywhere across the net or recieve from anywhere

What is the exact entry you've got in control/rcpthosts and control/locals?
Are you intending to control this domain through qmailadmin or not? If you
want to use qmailadmin/vpopmail to control that domain, you need to remove
it from control/rcpthosts and control/locals and run
~vpopmail/bin/vadd
Slowly working out the problems but now
the domain(harbor), is in both the control/rcpthosts and the control/locals
file
The message could not be sent because one of the recipients was rejected by
the server. The rejected e-mail address was '[EMAIL PROTECTED]'.

An urgent plea--it's quite annoying. Especially since my mail filter only
uses the first email address it finds, I end up with 2 copies of every
message in the same folder--it's a waste and just plain annoying! Very few
questions apply -both- to qmailadmin and vchkpw. Just ask where it's

There is a better solution. Use sendmail or use /etc/passwd and qmail. I
can justify using an IP address per domain because I actually host the
websites and mail of the domains that I take care of. That way, I can keep
everything with 1 IP address and it works great. I really do not at all

The sqlnet.log file is from the oracle connection driver, its not vpopmail
specific.
from the error you give us it looks like its trying to add a user that
already exists, however from the sqlnet.log file it looks like you are
having connection problems with the database.

See the FAQ at:

the also totalably notable thing is you can use [EMAIL PROTECTED] in
many email clients (eudora just does fucked up shit)
but i belive it works in outlook - anywhere where the input field is
suppose to just be the username

as with all great feature requests they tend to be accompanied by patches
which contain their implementation :)

i just think the administrator should have more control over pop usernames.
if your email address was [EMAIL PROTECTED] with the current naming
convention, your pop username would be brad%theinternet.com. but if you had
control over the naming system you could shorten it to something like 'bfp'
or
I think that is even more obscure than the user%somedomain.com naming
scheme. Imagine how much trouble you'd have telling users "you receive
email at [EMAIL PROTECTED], but when you login, use the pop account name
'bjs4$2.00'.." What kind of problems are you having with the current
naming scheme

currently, in order to avoid the %domain pop user naming scheme, the only
choice is ip aliasing, which requires an ip for each and every domain.
sometimes this is unrealistic or unachievable. why not create a system where
pop usernames can be unique, but not so clunky. there are many ways to do

(my problem is that, the smtp-auth login doesn't run with vpopmail/vchkpw).
If I use checkpassword as checker, it runs OK (only with system accounts, I
think).
If I use vchkpw, it fails.

Hello,
i have a little problem with vpopmail. All the bounces that come into
the "root" Mailbox on a sendmail installation are delivered by qmail

bounces, error-messages and cron messages by a virtual domain, so i

Make sure you've got an entry in your inetd.conf or a tcpserver for the
pop3 service.
