Re: [vchkpw] SMTP relay Problem
Hi, linuman Yes,,, just put the word 'recordio' after smtp in qmail-smtpd/run file and restart qmail. I am using following version of distros. qmail-1.03.tar.gz daemontools-0.76.tar.gz ucspi-tcp-0.88.tar.gz Your system similar to mine. Thank you for your reply. No problem. by the way, your supervise/qmail-smtp/run OK? your cron OK? Yeah qmail runs in my system without any problem except open relay for roaming users. my cron and cdb setting perhaps is valid for roaming users. see you again. www.messagewall.org i use it as mail relay, and its very good, it has basic spam filter, and nativly reads openantivirus definition files. [vchkpw] Vpopbull Problem
Hey all, I am running Vpopbull version 5.3.16, and I am running into the following problem. I am trying to use vpopbull to send a message to all users in a certain domain. This is my command: vpopbull -f filename -V domainname I hit return, and it starts running through all the accounts. However, once it gets to the middle of the accounts that begin with M it just stops like its done, returning me to a command prompt. I know earlier versions of vpopbull had a bug that did this, but I've used this copy to send messages to all my users in the past. Any ideas? TIA Brendan

Zitat von Andrew Kohlsmith [EMAIL PROTECTED]: Hi Andrew, No SMP here, but no problems so far, either, even under heavy NFS load. I'd exaclty that was the point under heavy SMP-load it broke with several error messages working as an NFS-Server ( kernel-space ). Ok, I didn't repeat the tests know for 15 month, because I decided to use XFS, so why should do these work again ? Maybe they are now fixed. But I really dont care and as I said it was meant to be _my_ experience. But you may search the reifers archives where you can find a lot of articles about this issue. It is (was) a known problem. eventually like to have the mail spool server as a two or three node (geographically distant) cluster, but I may have to move to AFS for that. AFS is fast and secure - I agree, but AFAIK volumes are limited to 8 GB I was originally looking at various DFSs but CODA and Intermezzo are both CODA also broke under heavy SMP-load in my tests. also under the impression that XFS was not a suitable FS, but I have to admit I did not look too hard. Do you have some resources on XFS and what to look out for? http://oss.sgi.com/projects/xfs/ You will find a lot of docu. XFS also supports full POSIX - ACL's. There are a lot of system tools that come with xfs ( diagnostic, dumps, restore, resize ) and which make life very easy and confortable. ( And of course I am familiar with XFS, because of my IRIX background ;-)) ). Feel free to use you FS of your choice, so do I. Cheers Jens

I've just migrated from vpopmail 5.2.1 using CDB til vpopmail 5.3.21 using MySql. On my testserver this went just fine, but when I did the same on the production server, dir-control is somehow lost. There is no 'dir-control' table in the database. Everything works fine (as far as I can see). Users can pick up their mail via both POP3 and IMAP, and mail are delivered correctly too. Can anyone tell me what is going on? Is this a big problem, that the dir-control isn't there? What can I do to bring it in? There has come more info on the problem: I have created a new domain after the migration and this have caused the dir_control table to be created. However, the table only contains info on this single new domain. All the old ones are not in the dir_control. I would be glad if someone could point me in the right direction, as I have no clue on how to solve the problem (yes, it seems like deleting all existing domains and the recreating them would do it, but that is not an option). I have searched the archive, but I didn't find anything on this subject. Thanks in advance! - Jonas

Hi, linuman Your cron and cdb settings are verymuch valied but technically it is not a good Idea. clearopensmtp will not clear the relay opened for that IP. You need to check the cdb database either it will upend the relay database or overwrite the database. If it overwrites, you are safe or else one fine day your mail server will listed in RBL site. ;-) Thank you for your good advice. I have already set clearopensmtp in cron service. 40 * * * * /home/vpopmail/bin/clearopensmtp 21 /dev/null Vpopmail will erase IP in 3 hours by default setting. (configure option --enable-relay-clear-minutes=180) And, For realize POP before SMTP, I think it necessary to build VPN for security. because user password leak. Not encrypted password !! Re: [vchkpw] Antivirus Scanner
You can run an Anti-Virus and Anti-Spam gateway with a lower MX value than your real mail server. The gateway filters, cleans, and deals with bounces. Good mail is passed onto your mail server. You can have multiple gateways at the same MX if you _really_ need to. qmail-scanner with clam-av and spamassassin is a nice combo that has also been well documented. This is something I was doing about 8 years ago on a sendmail system (and JT probably remembers it as well). In your case, just have a copy of the email go to another account, and set up a .qmail file for that account that pipes the message through a program or script of some sort. In our case, we were using Perl for its text munging capabilities. The Perl program would go through the headers and decide on whether the mail should even be forwarded to the alpha-pager (e.g., ignore mailing lists, etc.). If it was worthy of forwarding, another part of the script would modify the message to get as much information across as possible. It used F: S: B: to show the From, Subject and Body. From would use just the name on the account, and munge it to an abbreviation for common senders, subject and body would go through more modifiers that did things like replace with with w/ and from with f/. Some of the users would even StripWhitespaceFromTheMessageAndInlineCapitalizeEverything to get more in each message. It was quite effective, and shouldn't be too hard to implement with qmailadmin. -- Tom Collins [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Last it was unusable to be a cluster FS, because the standby host didn't see any file the origin hosts sees. Hmm -- I am running a 15k-user ISP mail system on Reiserfs on SW RAID1, exporting the 'domains' directory via NFS to the actual SMTP/POP3/IMAP4 servers, all over IPSec. The edge servers handle all the virus/spam scanning and deliver directly into the NFS mounted Maildirs, and the users can contact any edge server (usually routed to the closest one via a little DNS magic) to pick up and send their mail. No SMP here, but no problems so far, either, even under heavy NFS load. I'd eventually like to have the mail spool server as a two or three node (geographically distant) cluster, but I may have to move to AFS for that. I was originally looking at various DFSs but CODA and Intermezzo are both way too immature at this point, and AFS had no decent documentation. I was also under the impression that XFS was not a suitable FS, but I have to admit I did not look too hard. Do you have some resources on XFS and what to look out for? Regards, Andrew

[vchkpw] SPAM PROBLEM QMAIL + VPOPMAIL
In middle of 2001, I created mail server for multiple domains base on qmail: qmail 1.03 ucspi-tcp 0.88 vpopmail 4.9.10 courier-imap 1.3.8.1 Relaying is enable only from our internal network (LAN) and few our public IPs. I'm using also enable after pop base on open-smtp in vpopmain/etc. I have on this server 23 domains with total ~ 21,000 mail boxes. Most (95%)of the mailboxes are accessible only by java mail on our LAN, the 95% users may use only the mail for inside our java application, they don't even know the mailbox real password. For 2 days I was logging network traffic on this server (huge files!) and I know the spam is coming direct from Internet to port 25, every 3 seconds I'm also appending open-smtp file to other log. The IP what I was looking for I have from spamcop reports (we are listed there). The problem started just a few weeks ago. Did somebody found a method how hack qmail/vpopmail ??? Any idea ? Did anybody had a similar problem ? Any advice welcome. Thank you, AST -- Your favorite stores, helpful shopping tools and great gift ideas. Jens Jahr I can confirm this to some extend, due to a loop in a antivirus product, i ended up filling a little over 100gb with 5kb mails (thats roughly 20.000.000.000 emails) in the postmaster@ account. on the 1.13ghz p4 512mb Qmail didnt have any problems handeling the mails in que, and delivering them to the account, but sqwebmail timed out when trying to index / count them, also the ext3 file system took so long on a ls that i after a long time eventually gave up and killed the process, and rm -rf'ed the new dir. the lesson is as Jens points out, if you are going to use maildirs, you should use a file system thats geared to handeling huge amounts of small files. It usually gave you huge clues as to what the poem was REALLY about. That said, I think one should take great care in the SUBJECT line of an e-mail. Many of us get 100-300 emails A DAY. I generally skim thru my INBOX and read the subject lines to determine if I want to read on. Furthermore, subject lines that are less than descriptive to the subject/question/comment at hand pose even more of a problem when reading the archives. Perhaps I'm the only one that feels this way, but I'd like to see people put a little more thought into their subject lines. Just trying to help out the mail list community, Jeremy

Re: [vchkpw] Re: hmmm, question
Thanks for the suggestions (everyone). What I found as an alternative turned out to be a teeny tiny php app that uses the php IMAP functions to do email via WAP. This allows the customer to use the browser on his blackberry to see a list of messages in his inbox, along with subject lines, and it'll display up to 1024 characters of the message via a link. Works pretty well, after I worked out the bugs in it. For those interested: www.e-sphere.net The program is called WAPMail. As i mentioned there's a bug - likely a php4/3 issue, but it's documented in the in the support forum. If you want to avoid wading through all that: edit mailbox.obj, and fix line 104 so that it looks like this: $this-linked = imap_open(\{$this-imapserver:$this-imapport/notls}, $this-user, $this-password); i believe you can leave off the '/notls' if you're using tls. The \ is what's missing from the original. the program appears to be moribund - no development on it since september 2000, but as mentioned, the support forum is mildly active, and hey - it works! nice to be able to offer this service to my customers. Re: [vchkpw] SMTP relay Problem
Hi, linuman Did you tested properly that it is clearing the open relay. I tested by manualy running the command it din't clear the open relay. I finished to test properly. You can't erase manually IP. Because vpopmail erase automatically IP. clearopensmtp soon can't erase IP. clearopensmtp manual is the following SYNOPSIS clearopensmtp - remove old IP's added after pop authentication In the above, you must check old. DESCRIPTION vpopmail can be configured to allow pop users IP's to be added to the list of IP's which are allowed to relay through the smtp server. This is done with the --enable-roaming-users=y option. With this option, users IP's who authenitcate via pop are added to the list of IP's which can relay through the smtp server. The smtp server must be run with tcpserver -x filename option. Each authenticated pop users IP is added with a time stamp. Every time clearopensmtp is run, this list is checked for time stamps which are older than the --enable-relay-clear-minutes option. The default is 360 minutes or 3 hours. Any IP with a time stamp older than this number are removed from the list. clearopenstmp rebuilds the tcp.smtp.cdb file with the list of static IP's stored in tcp.smtp and the list of IP's in open-smtp. In the above, you must check --enable-relay-clear-minutes. If it realy clears pls let me know which file it will modify. Please refer my original cron and cdb script. Note: Insted of putting 59 lines of cron job you can put it in single line to run every second. 0-59/1 * * * * /path/to/qmail/script cdb Thank you for your advice.
