would it be possible to deprecate it in the 5.4 and 5.5 trees, obsolete it in 
5.6, and remove it entirely from 5.7?

I could write up a nice document on how to switch between the two methods, 
it's relatively easy to do.

In fact, I'll probably do it anyways. :)
