Matt Brookings told me at EMPF mailing list that the chkuser patch can be
used to implement smtp authentication, but I never read in any place that
chkuser could be used for that.
If it really can, could someone point me for a documentation on this
subject?

I just discovered that the chkuser-2.0.8b-release ships with a
netqmail-1.05_auth-0.4.2_chkuser-2.0.8.patch. Maybe this is the patch Matt
is referring to.
And I'm not sure, but I guess that this patch is Dr Erwin's auth patch(the
one shipped in vpopmail's contrib directory) but

No, you were mistaken when you thought I meant the chkusr patch did
SMTP

SMTP authentication. I said it works *with* SMTP authentication.
The mistake I made, earlier, is that I replied with a chkusr patch
link instead of SMTP authentication :)
