Yep, and you will find the solution is to increase the memory softlimit on
the
POP3 supervise script.

Changed softlimit from 25 to 200 and its all works great now.

If I try to pop3 these (Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla Thudnerbird)

Same problem happened after a week vacation, had to keep moving 
messages in and out of the maildir….

I found a deserted email account with over 70.000 messages (few
months of spam) 
in my vpopmail 5.4.3 mail server on FreeBSD…

 

If I try to pop3 these (Outlook, Outlook Express, Mozilla
Thudnerbird)

 

The problem is its responding like :  

Mail Sever … responded: unable to scan $HOME/Maildir

 

Pop3 workaround is to not to have more than 1500 messages in
the Maildir…

 

Same problem happened after a week vacation, had to keep
moving messages in and out of the maildir….
