What you say may be true. But I can tell you from our experience that
Eudora cannot smtp authenticate unless cram-md5 is 'undef' in qmail-smtpd.c
whereas Outlook can.

I tried both KMail and Evolution... without success
they both discovered PLAIN, LOGIN and CRAM-MD5 smtp-auth method available,
but can't use CRAM-MD5...
