even for pop3?  doesn't vchkpw setuid() to the vpopmail user after 
authenticating?

For starters, try a higher softlimit (like 1000).

You should also include the user and group to run as (add -u89 -g89 to

It seems you have your pop3d running with wrong user:
# ps aux | grep pop3
and
# ls -l ~vpopmail/domains/test.com/vpasswd*
