Re: [vchkpw] Qmail-vpopmail and delivery confermation

2009-07-02 Thread Tren Blackburn
I've never had any issues with them personally (aside from not liking the
concept) but as far as I know neither vpopmail nor qmail have anything to do
with delivery confirmation. It's a MUA to MUA thing and the recipient can
decide if he wants to confirm he read the message. Your client just needs to
check the confirm delivery box in outlook.

Mik,

You want to install vpopmail as usual on the new machine. On the old

Sorry, hit wrong button...

No for the software side, depending on how you have your mail setup, courier
or pop3 depends on the mail itself. If it's pop3 you can move it just fine,
as long as you setup vpopmail the same as before. If your using courier,
you can use a program like imapsync (sourceforge) and sync the mail from
old server to new server fairly easly.

I'm sure with more info, and more planning on your part you can get this
done. Try to determine how your old server was setup, eg. vpopmail, using
mysql or cdb for the domains for 1, roaming encryption etc...

You also need to backup mysql if you use it :) and
the assgin and virtual host in qmail otherwise you have to install all
the domains with the same username and passwd and then copy over the
users' info

Re: [vchkpw] qmail+vpopmail smtp-auth for roaming-users]

2007-02-08 Thread Michael Bowe
IMAP-before-SMTP is possible when using Courier-IMAP v3.x. However it only
works when configured --with-authvchkpw --without-authdaemon. When
running --without-authdaemon, Courier-IMAP's authvchkpw code is able to make
use of vpopmail's roaming user functions to allow IMAP-before-SMTP
functionality. IMAP-before-SMTP is not possible when Courier-IMAP has been
complied --with-authdaemon, because in this mode the user's IP address is
not made available to the authvchkpw code (via the TCPREMOTEIP env var).
Also note that in Courier-IMAP v4.x and later, --without-authdaemon
functionality is no longer available thus preventing IMAP-before-SMTP from
working.

Hope that helps!

Hi,

I used Bill Schupp's Qmail Toaster to install the following:

autorespond-2.0.4 - courier-authlib-0.58 - courier-imap-4.1.2 -
netqmail-1.05 - toaster-scripts-0.8.1 - ucspi-tcp-0.88

Everything works as expected except for the fact that open-smtp is NOT
being updated by courier-imap upon login. Pop3 logins authenticate and
update the open-smtp properly. I googled and read practically all the info
on this topic, but it seems that nothing I do will get courier-imap to
update the open-smtp file!!

I did do::

export CFLAGS=-DHAVE_OPEN_SMTP_RELAY
./configure --with-authvchkpw --without-authdaemon

My tcp.smtp contains:

127.:allow,RELAYCLIENT=
192.168.0.:allow,RELAYCLIENT=

Have I missed something out? Any ideas or pointers will be welcome.

Much thanks and rgds. Otto Rodusek.

Hi Joshua,

Thanks for the reply.

The majority of my users are using pop3 - however I have a handful of
senior execs that need/want to use imap (this is tied to our webmail
wapmail interfaces). This cutomer was an existing user of
qmail/vpopmail/courier (installed in 2003) however we just recently
went through a major upgrade. The old system worked quite well (with
open-smtp) for both pop3 and imap users.

It appears from Micheal Bowe's reply that courier-imap v4.xx no longer
supports this (but apparentl;y 3.0.8 does) - so I guess I will need to
try and install the older version of courier-imap - unless I can find a
diif but easy solution.

Hi,

Run the commands:

In this way doublebounces will go to the user doublebounce, who's .qmail

I think this is what Tom is getting at.

because double bounces get delivered to postmaster by default. If your

2005-11-04 Thread Sam

Hi,

The command
#Echo doublebounce /var/qmail/control/doublebounceto
worked.
As for the second command
#echo # /var/qmail/alias/.qmail-doublebounce
Nothing happened. I do not know why, but I installed it
using
#touch .qmail-doublebounce
then I put# and saved.

It is working now.

Thank you All.

Hi,

Run the commands:

#Echo doublebounce /var/qmail/control/doublebounceto
#echo # /var/qmail/alias/.qmail-doublebounce

In this way doublebounces will go to the user doublebounce, who's .qmail
file has nothing in it and so the mail will fall into a black hole.

I think this is what Tom is getting at.

Andrew.

Tom you hit it right.
My problem is tones of doublebounces of spam from forged return and bad
addresses.

I do not have doublebounceto file under
/var/qmail/control/
How do I set it up and what should be in it,
to have doublebounces go to that file instead of
[EMAIL PROTECTED]
forwarding them to postmaster?

I will create .qmail-doublebounce and put # in
/var/qmail/alias/.qmail-doublebounce

Looks like doublebounce messages. What do you have in
/var/qmail/control/doublebounceto?

I've set my server to have doublebounce in that file, and then put #
in /var/qmail/alias/.qmail-doublebounce. That way doublebounces are just
deleted -- 99.9% of them are crap and not worth looking at (e.g., spam
from forged return addresses).

 Hi,
We have vpopmail version 5.2.1 with qmail 1.03 + mysql 3.23 on Redhat 7.3.
It was running fine for the past 3 years until now.
Lately the server at random gets slow and very busy and could not be
accessed until restarted with a hard reset.

The only thing I can think of is rebuilding the system.
Any ideas as to why this is happening?

 Thanks,

I did that, [EMAIL PROTECTED] and thats the error I get, I'm missing
something cuz even removing the patch its not storing email somehow. Even
tho the mx isn't setup, I do it locally, telnet localhost 25 (which has to
my knowledge everything I need to do email) it accepts it, but I dont show
it coming up in my new folder under home/vpopmailMaildir. I'm missing
something somewhere, lol I may just end up removing everything and just
starting anew. Migrating is such a pain most of the time. Its not like I
have thousands accounts, its like 5 or 6 max. I haven't actually checked
but its not alot. Perhaps I didn't do the mysql migration properly. But I
do a select * from vpopmail and it lists all the accounts exactly the same
as the primary. Idont get errors adding email accounts either so I'm at a
lost.

Yes, I could. I just picked LDAP because it was the easiest thing to
get our client software (Emerald) to export to. It is to bad vpopmail
doesnt have support for the qmail.schema found in qmail-ldap.

If there isn't one there really should be some sort of standard for

Yes it probably would be. But the only way I can see to get emerald to

just have to access the database emerald stores info in. The reason I

The perfect world would be a vpopmail mailbox management combined with
 postfix MTA :-)

Yes! I keep saying that. I had heard that there is work going on to create
an abstraction layer between vpopmail and qmail (i.e. vpopmail functions do
X rather than doing X with qmail). I promptly joined the development list
but its low traffic and I don't really see a lot of those types of changes
happening... nor do I see a well defined path layed out where anyone else
can help to make this happen without either just doing it all themselves or
contributing work with your fingers crossed.

The main/only developers on vpopmail seem VERY fixated on qmail and for some
reason are unwilling to work towards supporting other MTA.

(in re 'MODERN')
I disagree. Despite the age of the original code base, qmail is still a
modern and viable replacement for sendmail. However, it's not very
featureful -- which is fine for replacing most versions of sendmail
anyway. I believe that the majority of sendmail installations do not use
STARTTLS or SMTP AUTH.

(in re patches)
Funny. I've never thought so.

One thing I like about having to patch qmail is the ability to decide at
compile-time what extensions I want to use. This allows me to limit the
amount of unused code compiled into my MTA. (In the era of modern
computing and the prevalence of CPU's well over 2GHz, this may not mean a
lot. However, I run qmail on a 50MHz SparcStation LX and I'm a bit picky
about what goes into it.) Having only ever compiled Postfix once (and
many moons ago at that), I do not know if the same option is present
there.

But I'm wandering off topic for the vpopmail list.

Ooh... While we're at it, we could add vpopmail support for sendmail...

well, qmail isn't a ronco pocket fisherman either. that doesn't make it
less than an excellent MTA.

patching? okay, you've got me there. doesn't bother me however. i've run
qmail since 1997. works great. no security issues. why muck with what

Once vpopmail is abstracted from qmail that would be easy. :)

I fully realize that everyone who uses vpopmail also uses qmail. Me too. A
lot of people like qmail. Others would like to be able to use vpopmail
(which is great) with other MTA that they are more familiar with or just
prefer. This isn't anti-qmail its pro-vpopmail.

Somehow I worry the discussion of MTA+MDA will venture to an evangelistic
argument/discussion (much like that between linux/windows/mac etc).

When we first came to the need for a more powerful MTA back in 1999,
qmail+vpopmail+qmailadmin seemed to be the best features wise, and
administration wise. In dealing with the ever growing spam, a re-evaluation
in 2003 lead us to believe that qmail+vpopmail+qmailadmin still had a slight
edge over the others, including postfix.

As Rainer said, it seems that postfix has more upfront, but it still seems
that qmail can be patched very well. Currently, I'm running
qmail+vpopmail+qmailadmin, qmail-scanner w/ClamAV, mailfilter invoking
SpamAssassin for userbased SA.

Qmails only holdback is the lack of development (but does a stable secure
MTA need development?), patches add features as needed. But, its not like
MTA requirements has changed over the years, it's the MDA, and that's easy
to plug something else in its place.

No, i don't think that the vpopmail development is on a halt, i think
that it's the opposite: vpopmail dev was stopped on v5.2.x version when
was developed only by inter7, since Tom Collins has joined (or better:
maintaned) the development vpopmail has get a big sprint.

I don't think that the problem is vpopmail, the problem is qmail:
after 6 years since 1.03 version there's no modific to the original
version, now you always need addictional feature like antivirus
integration, more spam filters, a lot of other things... this lead to a
patch-over-patch phenomenon that is an headace for the qmail
administrator.
So you need a toaster like netqmail-1.05 + bill shupp patches, but
sometimes this is not enoght. On the other hand postfix is active
developed even on the core.
So i think that the problem of qmail is its license and it's author's
ego.

be picking back up again. Even QMail seems to be at least partially
back under development with the Netqmail package. It's giving me
hope for the platform that I've invested so much of my personal time
 into.

For those of you who have had the opportunity to work with BOTH

Yes I agree

I extensively used qmail/vpopmail at the ISP I used to own.

However, I sold the business to a larger ISP last year, and now I work for
them. They use postfix as their standard mail server. Since being exposed
to this software I marvel at all the fabulous features compared with qmail.
In particular the ease that you can perform a vast array of checks /
filtering on incoming mail. The more I see of postfix, the more I understand
just how out-of-date that qmail really is.

But! whenever I demonstrate the vpopmail software to any of the guys at my

No. Just configure tcp.smtp for all static IP's you want to allow to
relay without authentication, like internal servers that need an outbound

For example:
127.0.0.1:allow,RELAYCLIENT=

Hi,
I installed the smtp-auth patch, the certificate was created fine,
client Mozilla recognized this certificate,
and sending/receiving emails from LAN worked fine, but LAN IP is into
/etc/tcp.smtp. Then, it's not
using authentication.

When I tried to remove LAN from /etc/tcp.smtp, to test real
authentication the first message error was:

553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)
553 no valid cert for gatewaying (#5.7.1)
Then, I followed the link http://www.differentpla.net/node/view/170
where it's said to change the
supervise/qmail-smtpd/run into user/group ID from QMail to VPopmail.
After do this, the message
error changed to the traditional:

553 sorry, that domain isn't in my list of allowed rcpthosts (#5.7.1)
the error about gatewaying didn't occur more.
What's the problem?
Is it needed to execute the run script with VPopmail users/group?
What about the first problem about gatewaying?

Note that, 'current' file has none of those deferred lines. So from last two
days its gone? Confusing.

I have just my domain running on qmail and mails keep moving in and out
without any problem. At first i got bugged but later kept quiet thinking
this is a kind of issue related with Maildir or maildir.

To be frank, i'm still not able to trace the problem i'm facing because of
this. By its meaning, 'deferred' means delayed, unable to chdir_to_maildir,
maybe because the mail in my box does'nt reach directly to the user inbox,
i.e., mail is handled by qmail-scanner, Clam AV and SpamAssassin and then to
inbox.

Thought of all these and closed the issue by myself. If anyone educates me
and Christopher more on this, we'll be very much thankful to them.
:)

Qmail

But it barfs when I put it in (there's a temporary error message when

be causing these problems?

I don't know if it will help with this particular problem, but 5.3.30
fixes a lot of problems with 5.3.29. I highly recommend 5.3.30 (or
even 5.3.28) over 5.3.29.

That got rid of the error message, but outgoing messages were still stuck in

Anyway, I installed everything on a new machine and now it worked stright

By the way, I am still curious about the role of /home/vpopmail/etc/tcp.smtp.

RE: [vchkpw] qmail + vpopmail + maildrop + sqwebmail + qmailadmin + vqadmin

2003-08-28 Thread Clayton Weise
Not quite sure how your setup is.. but I finally got maildrop/vpopmail
working for me by using a version of vpopmail that has the seekable patch
and putting a .qmail file inside each user's directory who wants a spam
filter.

It has worked out beneficially for me because the spam filter can now be set
on a per-user basis instead of a per-domain basis when I was doing it
through .qmail-default. Quotas seem to work just fine with both maildrop
1.3.8 and 1.6.0, I haven't really noticed a difference. It supposedly
ignores the MAILDIRQUOTA variable now and just reads the maildirquota file,
but I haven't removed the MAILDIRQUOTA variable from my maildrop script
either. Haven't seen a need for it, system is performing just fine and I
doubt removing that line would make a very notiacable different. A thing to
note about the .qmail method inside each user's directory is that vpopmail
hands the message off to maildrop and maildrop then acts as the delivery
agent in place of vpopmail.

The other cool thing about having it on a per-user basis is that I don't
need to worry about people clobbering their .qmail-default file with
qmailadmin. Hope that helps some..

It's been a long long time since I last looked at this stuff, but I
really want/need to implement it.

1 - qmail - is simple.
2 - vpopmail + maildrop - this is where i am now (again).

As I recall it, my problems went something like this:

A. I had to mkdir courier when building maildrop to get it to read
MAILDIRQUOTA from the environment.

B. I had to write some shell scripts to wrap maildrop for the actual
delivery, basically to take the place of vdelivermail. Right now, I'm
not sure why, but I think it was in order to get quotas working
properly; setting the MAILDIRQUOTA, HOME, and DEFAULT environment
vars. In the end, they call maildrop -d vpopmail .mailfilter

I had to patch vpopmail to use these scripts instead of vdelivermail.

C. I had apparently patched vdominfo to add a -A flag to display
domain aliases.

D. I had apparently patched vpopmail to not allow one to delete a
domain if there were aliases for it.

Anyway, it's been a long time since I really looked at this stuff.
The last version of vpopmail I looked at was 5.3.3, and the last
version of maildrop I looked at was 1.3.8. I just looked at the
changelog for maildrop up to 1.6.0, and I see that there was some work
on the quota handling, so I might not need my shell scripts anymore.

Basically, I'm looking for any pointers for getting vpopmail,
maildrop, and sqwebmail working together nicely. I'll be using MySQL
on the backend for vpopmail, and (of course?) Maildirs for storing the
email.

Thanks in advance..

The solution is configure vpopmail with --enable-clear-passwd=n parameter.

I have no idea how this fix the problem, but it's something with the

Hi lixiang,

OK, now I see your Prob !!

It is somekind of loop that you configured:

See here:

slapd.conf:

--- snip
 suffix dc=koal,dc=com
 rootdn cn=root,ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com --- WRONG !!
--- snap

vldap.h
--- snip
 #define VLDAP_BASEDN ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com
 #define VLDAP_USER cn=root,ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com  --- WRONG !!
--- snap

###
You solution should look like this:

slapd.conf:

--- snip
 suffix dc=koal,dc=com
rootdn cn=root,dc=koal,dc=com This is the difference
--- snap

vldap.h
--- snip
 #define VLDAP_BASEDN ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com
 #define VLDAP_USER cn=root,dc=koal,dc=com   This is the difference

--- snap

The rootdn must _not_ be a ldap entry that is inside your trie !!!
It is just an internal User !!

So you might try this.
And remenber ! Your organisation ( dc=koal,dc=com ) and your arganisational Unit
( ou=people, dc=koal, dc=com) must both exist !!

And please make sure yout BASEDN in vldap.h is used.
E.g. like

#define VLDAP_BASEDN ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com

And delete the #if-def clause

Cheers
Jens

Hi, Jens:

actually, my rootdn was cn=root,dc=koal,dc=com in both my vldap.h and slapd.conf
in the before, and i ensured that the basedn in vldap.h was
ou=people,dc=koal,dc=com . i tested what you mentioned just now, this cann't help
me .
the err acck ,child crashed error remains.
if i input a user which doesn't exsit, it will reports err authorization failed.
if i input the correct user and password, it will reports err acck, child crashed .
i think it has recognized the user and password ,but sth lead to the child crashed
error. i have searched the vpopmail mailing list, there were many reports about the
same error, and it seems that many reasons will lead to this error, but until now, i
still havn't find any valuable solution to me.

my configure parameters:

./configure --enalbe-ldap=y --enable-roaming-users=y --enable-logging=y

redhat 7.3
vpopmail-5.3.20
openldap-2.0.27
qmailadmin-1.0.20

any suggestions?
thanks a lot, :-),

Hi lixiang,

sorry for my late responds, I have been off for holiday ;-))
So if you verified your LDAP-Entries that they look like below ( e.g. with gq )
your are fine.

 dc=koal,dc=com
   |
 -ou=people
|
 - ou=test.com
 |
  -uid=postmaster
  -uid=user1
  -uid=user2

It may be an access error, please check your settings in slapd.conf and compare
them with your compilation in vldap.h

BaseDN and Binddn _must_ be correct, because if vpopmail tries to bind via an
non existing ldap-user it doesn't see any entries at all.

Here is a sample of a successful auth:
---snip

Jul 15 10:35:09 mail slapd[21275]: conn=1047818 op=1 SEARCH RESULT tag=101
err=0 nentries=1 text=

--- snap

Make sure your settings in vldap.h are correct:

--- snip
define VLDAP_SERVER localhost
#define VLDAP_PORT LDAP_PORT
#define VLDAP_USER cn=root,dc=,dc=net This must be equal to
slapd.conf
#define VLDAP_PASSWORD password This must be equal to
slapd.conf

#define MAX_BUFF 500

#define VLDAP_BASEDN ou=people,dc=x,dc=net

--- snap

 Look at slapd.conf ###

--- snip
rootdn cn=root,dc=,dc=net --- This must be equal to
vldap.h
rootpwpassword This must be equal to
vldap.h

--- snap

I think that is the reason for your probs.

Have both of the initial LDAP-entries completed ?

snip
dn: dc=xxx,dc=net
objectclass: organization
o: xxx

dn:ou=people,dc=,dc=cn
objectclass: organizationalUnit
ou:people
snap

Please let me know if that doesnt help.

Yes, if you are using the MySQL backend with vpopmail,
then you will need to specify a larger-than-normal softlimit
setting for the pop3d.

For more information, take a look at this quick guide that I wrote :

Bill,

Sorry it took so long. Work kept getting in the way. Here's a link to my
PostgreSQL files that I'm currently using in production. I've also included
the stuff that Nels provided so I could compile it in using configure.
Hopefully you can work it into something for the next development build.
Things have been a little quieter the last couple days. I should have time
to test as well.

http://www.cot.net/~charlieb/vpopmail/

The 16k file contains all I *think* you need to make it work. Just in case,
I've included a compressed and uncompressed directory structure of my build
tree.

Thanks,
Charlie

I've read some previous messages in the archive, regarding the
possibility of using PostgreSQL as a vpopmail backend. I hate to admit
it, I haven't understood a thing. Is the vpgsql module active by
default ? There's no ./configure argument for that, as in MySQL's
case. I really can't find my way through this. Would anyone be so kind
to provide me with a little howto on this matter ? Thanks in advance.

You may want to check your computer's date, it's not 1969.

Postgres support is still experimental. I have been contributing a few
patches in the last week or so on the latest development builds in order to
enable it.

Postgres support's been in there for a long long time, but it was never
finished nor was it fully functional. I _think_ I have everything but
logging done now. 5.3.18 has my code, but you need to hack the makefile to
get it to work. 5.3.19 should have it enable-able from ./configure.

Andrew

ok.. i guess i might have an answer.
courier-imap-1.7.ebuild makes use of authdaemon.
authdaemon doesn't get the TCPREMOTEIP env variable.
so: what should the poor vpopmail vopen_smtp_relay think it should set ??

a quick'n'dirty solution:

make sure /usr/lib/courier-imap/authlib/authvchkpw exists.

replace the need net authdaemond lines in your /etc/init.d/courier* scripts
with need net

replace the AUTHMODULES=authdaemon line with AUTHMODULES=authvchkpw in
your /etc/courier-imap/imapd /etc/courier-imap/imapd-ssl

The main problem was gentoo does not install authvchpw in
/usr/lib/courier-imap/authlib/ Once you manually install that file.
Hacking up the init and conf scripts is a breeze.

2003-02-22 Thread Andrew Kohlsmith
I've read some previous messages in the archive, regarding the possibility
of using PostgreSQL as a vpopmail backend. I hate to admit it, I haven't
understood a thing. Is the vpgsql module active by default ? There's no
./configure argument for that, as in MySQL's case. I really can't find my
way through this. Would anyone be so kind to provide me with a little howto
on this matter ? Thanks in advance.

You may want to check your computer's date, it's not 1969.

Postgres support is still experimental. I have been contributing a few
patches in the last week or so on the latest development builds in order to
enable it.

Postgres support's been in there for a long long time, but it was never
finished nor was it fully functional. I _think_ I have everything but
logging done now. 5.3.18 has my code, but you need to hack the makefile to
get it to work. 5.3.19 should have it enable-able from ./configure.

Regards,
Andrew

Qmail doesn't listen on any ports. tcpserver listens on whatever ip's you
tell it to.. by default, people put 0 which means all ip's bound to the

2003-02-10 Thread Jonas Pasche
Hi Anonymous,

please use a real name when posting. Thanks.

Is there a way to use a filter on every user in a vpopmail-domain directory
without putting the filter in every .qmail-user file ?

Not on a per-domain basis. You can use server-wide scanners like
qmail-scanner (http://qmail-scanner.sf.net/) to do so.

 Or maybe set vpopmail
in a way so than it includes the filter when creating a domain or user.

Would require a patch. I'm not aware of a patch that does what you want.
Feel free to create one. :)

Keith,

In an effort to troubleshoot this particular problem... Would it be
possible for you to alter the assign file to also include an entry for
kelnet.net_ but point to the same information as the other entry in the
assign file?

Then see if it works... (this would test the rest of the vpopmail
installation as it sits.)

I am pretty sure it will because of the stray _ in there.

I have to wonder where that is coming from.

Seems like it might be a bug with the gcc compiler or the glibc
itself... as I have heard there are some issues with that gcc
compiler... I am not really sure... As I understand the process
qmail-smtpd receives the mail and then hands it over to vckpw which
mangles the user information into the EXT compatiable format
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (which vdelievermail uses when the variables come
from qmail-local/qmail-command).

It might be possible that vckpw is suspect in RH8.0 when compiled with
that version of gcc... I read that you tried the compiled binaries on
RH8.0 but I think you are talking about qmail not vpopmail (which is
where the issue probably resides).

Good luck on getting it sorted... I could dig through the code, but I am
having my own issues that I am trying to dig through the code to find
right now... (post forth coming shortly).

Let me know what you find out.

I am always curious when something odd like this pops up.

It is hard to tell with the line wrapping, but after looking at your first
post of this file I believe the problem is that '/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d`
is on a new line, when it should either be immediately after vchkpw or there
should be a \ as the last character on the vchkpw line. Fix this, the pop3d
service should start within 5 seconds after its fixed.

What you have:
#!/bin/sh
   exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 500 \
   /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup \

/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir 21

What it should be:
#!/bin/sh
   exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 500 \
   /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup \

Well Matt from looking at this and the fact that I also run Redhat 7.3 I see
one thing wrong. Your default /etc/services file has your pop-3 as pop3. There
are several ways to fix this, 1) either modify the /etc/services [bad idea],
2) Modify your run script to say pop3 [good choice], or 3) modify your run
script to say 110 instead of pop-3 [best choice, unless you use a different
port number]. Hope that helps some.

It would be great if you could turn off line wrapping in your mailer.
Thanks.

 [root@jordan qmail-pop3d]# cat -e run
  #!/bin/sh$
 exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 500 \$
 /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup
\$
 alesi.projecthugo.co.uk /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw
 /var/qmail/bin/qma
 il-pop3d Maildir 21$
 $

It is hard to tell with the line wrapping, but after looking at your first
post of this file I believe the problem is that '/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d`
is on a new line, when it should either be immediately after vchkpw or there
should be a \ as the last character on the vchkpw line. Fix this, the pop3d
service should start within 5 seconds after its fixed.

What you have:
#!/bin/sh
   exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 500 \
   /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup \
   alesi.projecthugo.co.uk /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw
/var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir 21

What it should be:
#!/bin/sh
   exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 500 \
   /usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup \
   alesi.projecthugo.co.uk /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw \
  /var/qmail/bin/qmail-pop3d Maildir 21

Good luck,

Cory

Hi Cory, thanks for the input. the wrapping is not from my email client it is
the fact that I am using ms telnet and that is wrapping the text - I can't
turn this off it is just ms telnet is rubbish.

I have added the / as you suggested, and the pop3 daemon starts up for 1
second then the status shows it never lives longer than a second.

[root@jordan qmail-pop3d]# ps ax|grep readproc
1164 ?S 0:01 readproctitle service errors: ... unable to start
qma
il-pop3d/run: exec format error?supervise: fatal: unable to start

atal: unable to start qmail-pop3d/run: exec format error?
 7056 pts/1R 0:00 grep readproc
[root@jordan qmail-pop3d]#

(sorry about the wrap - )

and the script now looks like

[root@jordan qmail-pop3d]# cat -e run
 #!/bin/sh$
exec /usr/local/bin/softlimit -m 500 \$
/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -H -R 0 pop-3 /var/qmail/bin/qmail-popup \$
alesi.projecthugo.co.uk /home/vpopmail/bin/vchkpw \
/var/qmail/bin/q
mail-pop3d Maildir 21$
$
[root@jordan qmail-pop3d]#

I still can't connect - I am assuming this is because pop3 daemon is not
staying up longer than 1 second. I am re-reading the vchkpw documents I used
to install and configure vpopmail and it mentions setting up the qmail-pop3d
run script referencing the pop3 service from /etc/services

[root@jordan qmail-pop3d]# cat /etc/services | grep pop
# unfortunately the poppassd (Eudora) uses a port which has already
# been assigned to a different service. We list the poppassd as an
#3com-tsmux 106/tcp poppassd
#3com-tsmux 106/udp poppassd
pop2109/tcp pop-2 postoffice # POP version 2
pop2109/udp pop-2
pop3110/tcp pop-3 # POP version 3
pop3110/udp pop-3
pop3s 995/tcp # POP-3 over SSL
pop3s 995/udp # POP-3 over SSL
kpop1109/tcp# Pop with Kerberos
poppassd106/tcp # Eudora
poppassd106/udp # Eudora

I am assuming pop-3 is the correct alias to put in the run script (as you
can see above) should it be pop3 though ?

Thanks for your time on this,

Matt.

This the question I have just asked.I have modified the script again as
suggested to reference pop3 instead of pop-3.

I still cannot get the qmail-pop3d daemon to stay up longer than 1 second.

I need to know if 1 second is whats expected as I would not expect the pop3
daemon to stay up all the time just spawn when called. I could be wrong
though.

Thanks,

Matt.

Title: qmail + vpopmail + mysql + Redhat 8

  vpopmail + mysql + Redhat 8
I have two servers; one with Redhat 8
installed and one with redhat 7.3 installed. They both have mysql and qmail
installed and configured identically. The redhat 7.3 server can send and
receive email just fine using vpopmail 5.2.1. When I configure the Redhat 8
server to be the primary mailserver with vpopmail, always gives me the
  following error:
  failure:
Sorry,_no_mailbox_here_by_that_name._(#5.1.1)/ I've tried the newer version of vpopmail but have
not gotten it to work. Has anyone else gotten qmail and vpopmail to work with
  Redhat 8?
[Matt Darcy]Looks like your user accounts are on the7.3
  server and database.

export the vpopmail database and import it on the 8.0 box and
copythe domains from $VPOPMAILHOME/domains on the 7.3 machine to the 8.0
  $VPOPMAILHOME/domains

  Just
  a thought
