DEFAULTGROUP is not named well or used well. The only place it is used is to determine the max times (initial max, max extend, and total time) for a user if the user is not a member of any user groups. It's not a group people are in by default as the name may suggest. But to answer your specific question, it is the name of the user group without the affiliation, and the affiliation ends up being what is set for DEFAULT_AFFILID.
