Re: Mac OS-X on VCL?
-BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE- Hash: SHA1 Hi, I think there are a few things that need to be addressed about running OSX images. 1. Licensing If VMware, Parallel, and Virtual Box can run OSX server in virtualization. It seems to me - we can follow their lead, and run OSX server virtualized on Apple hardware, and stay within the license. 2. OSX module While it is true OSX is running Unix (Darwin/Mach). There have been significant changes under the hood. (i.e. 'Launched' changes things a great deal - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Launchd). So, while the general structure, of say Linux.pm can be used. It does take some work to find/create alternate commands. 3. Remote access OSX doesn't really include a good remote desktop system. You can configure it to use VNC. But VNC's protocol(RFB) doesn't include things like encryption, sound, drive mapping, .etc. I have tried quite a few windows VNC clients to connect to Apple's VNC server. TightVNC ran the best, but it still crashed more often than I would like. You can get a third party product (i.e. http://www.coderebel.com - iRAPP's RDP server)to provide the RDP server. But, it's an additional cost, and it's inclusion, would change how the VCL image is accessed. I have a instance of OSX Server running under VMWare's ESXi on a MacPro. I've been running tests on it. I hope to figure out how to add it to VCL. People have been asking for it. Re: Mac OS-X on VCL?
If you read the license, it prohibits it rather than just not supporting it. (Or at least did the last time I read it.) Yes. Apple only allows virtualizing OSX Server on Apple hardware. I assumed that you weren't running on Apple hardware (I'm not) and hence I didn't mention that option. Re: Mac OS-X on VCL?
Licence does allow running Mac OS X Server version in virtual machine. Oracle VirtualBox, Parallels (?) and VMWare already supports running Mac OS X in virtual machine. This still might mean that it requires Apple approved hardware and host OS must be Mac OS X. -david On 2011.03.28, at 15:50, Mark Gardner wrote: > The main problem is that Apple's license does not allow it. > > Mark > > On Mon, Mar 28, 2011 at 8:40 AM, Waldron, Michael H > wrote: > Has anyone written a provisioning module to deploy Mac OS-X images on the > VCL? Re: Mac OS-X on VCL?
The main problem is that Apple's license does not allow it. Mac OS-X on VCL?
Has anyone written a provisioning module to deploy Mac OS-X images on the VCL? I know very little about Mac but it appears to be very Unix-like under the covers.
