your locale settings could be wrong.

that does not work, ls --help keeps english with LANGUAGE=de_DE only
LANG=de_DE works.

cp Make.config.template Make.config
edit it and set LOCDIR=./locale

I updated now to version 1.5.8 and it seems to run fine.
Only the OSD is english and I cannot change it to german.
I checked the logfile and found:
