Nathan,
Are you using RMAN to back up the database.
There are many settings available to optimize RMAN-nbu disk to disk
backup.
Consider using a vault profile or running a script that:
-displays all images created on a client in the last n hours.
-that list is passed as an argument to bpduplicat
I'm glad you posted that you are on Win2K3, SP whatever. My first thought was
to tell you about VSS until I saw you were on Win2K. Yes, I have been fighting
a vicious VSS memory leak for over 18 months on Win2K3 SP1 and SP2. This
pertained to file serving, not backups per say, but backups do
Our NetApp Nearstore VTL will do the following when you initiate import from a
physical tape:
It will immediately mount the tape and start importing(depending on available
physical drives, it doesn't pre-empt the write queue to read anything). The
tape is immediately seen by the media server a
Knut,
I am just curious how significant is the time taken to import data to VTL.

Since Stuart is soliciting feedback from his former co-workers...:
We do have VTLs in our environment, and a rather complex setup. I'm not sure if
our environment would qualify as any "best practices", however.
We're on NetBackup 5.1, Solaris master, 4 Linux media servers, 4 Windows media

RMAN to disk does work
But what about sbtinit? Is that a netbackup piece? Where is sbtinit
called from? When RMAN does a disk job, it is basically a disk dump.
All SBT functions are not used.

We are going through the upgrade process right now (5.1 to 6.5.1. on

run into a couple of hiccups:
1. DB inconsistency: Call Symantec!!! Save your sanity, lol!

Excellent point and one that I had thought of. I went back and looked at my
email and I had a typo; the OS is W2K3 SP1 (problem box) and W2K3 SP2
(master). But that is something I have been toying with. Do you happen to
know if there were any "fixes" to the VSS/WMI process in SP2? Another

It should be done by the agent host that can be installed on the
master, on a media or on vbr management server.

Actually the bpbrm IS apparently invoked on the client at the beginning
of the backup based on my read of the details in the Activity Monitor
and my later solution.
As noted in my original posting I was seeing this specifically on RHEL5
clients that used the Master for Media Server. Having dozens
Matthew,
I don't know if you've purchased the product yet, but I have used VBR before

Right Ed ... the DR site across the street is still on our company
campus.
Currently it is just for testing and provides an alternative if the main

has power issues or like you said flood or fire.
Right the hot catalog is out with 6 so our media servers are NB 6
version.
