Hey crew,
I'm not sure if this is possible, but is NetBackup Vault capable of:
* taking a backup image on tape ABC123
* duplicating the image to some other volume (say ABC124)
* promoting the copy on ABC124 to primary
* automatically deleting the original backup on ABC123 so that my only
ftp for root user is disabled by default on Solaris.
Look for file called ftpusers under /etc/ftpd. If 'root' appears on the 1st
line, ftp as root is disabled. Comment out this line.
Test first by doing ftp from master to client. If that works, the push-install
using ftp method will work.
I think that you have to be at 6.5.4 to do that.
Else, for all these steps, you can use lifecycle

Let me explain *why* I'm trying to do this and maybe someone will have a
different approach to solve the same problem.
I'm trying to deploy a NetApp Virtual Tape Library. I have three
objectives for the deployment:
* My RPO is between 24 and 48 hours. I vault every weekday to get last
I don't know much about vault, but can you create a special storage unit
with only 4 or 6 tapes to write the duplications to? I.e. write your
backups to a storage unit with 80 drives, but only let vault duplicate
to a storage unit with 4 drives? We do something similar to what you are
doing here

You can set the expiration(in hours) after a successful duplication of
the original images in the duplication step in vault. There is a check
box at the bottom and a field to set the number of hours of either disk
or tape images. ( You might have to select the advanced configuration)
This will
Don't think that'll work, that applies to disk backup images only (if I
interpret it correctly, never actually tried). Wouldn't work with your
VTL images.

Not sure when it started in 6.5, but in 6.5.4 there is the options for both
disk and tape images with each being able to take different times.
But then it might not show up for tape duplications since I only duplicate from
disk.

Greetings,
I'm going nuts trying to figure out what is happening with one of my SAN
media servers (NBU 5.1, hpux 11.11 servers). Everything was fine on
Saturday morning. Backups went as planned. Saturday night, one of the
media servers wiped out all 65 scratch tapes in the library. On the
My first thought is to run the database consistency check.

I've thought about it but it for the media server since it doesn't show any
valid media. I don't think that it would be anything on the master since it
and the 5 other media servers have no problems using these tapes.
One other thing I noticed the other day. The media server decided not to
With that info I would start looking at your drives.
You know that if the drives are configured wrong what you said happed
will happen.
If nb load the tape on drive 2 but the server is looking for it in drive
3 then they think there is an issue and will freeze the tape.
So do some

I have seen the problems like this also, but a tape never gets loaded. It
freezes 60 tapes in less than a couple of minutes. My library could not
load and unload tapes that fast. I've also checked the device monitor

I agree, lifecycle is better as it will guarantee what you have requested
to happen will happen before the images will expire. If you have a vault
process fail, you may not get the images duplicated if you don't rerun it
manually. All you'll have to do in Vault is setup the eject.

They say the definition of insanity is doing the same thing and expecting
