It is exactly what i do for a DR process. Only caveat is need to have
the hostname of the backup server to be the same as its embedded into
the catalogue and with different host names i couldnt get the robot and
certain things to work correctly.

VSS is using the Windows VSS service, which in turn can access other technology such as Veritas Volume Manager, or snapshot/mirror capabilities of your disk hardware, which would be the way to go if you're licensed for those goodies.
I am about to implement FlashBackup to backup some huge Windows

Well you know more about NBU than me, but my only suggestion is a
powerdown and restart of the daemons or server
perhaps.

For anyone who is interested...
Here is a little scriptlet to check all your tape drives and add up
the hours on each one.
Just put the NetBackup names of your SSO media servers in the script.
#!/usr/bin/perl

# Check Tape Drives for mount

I'm looking for some feedback as to how many LTO3 drives people are
putting on the Decru encryption appliances. Our reseller said a maximum
of 4 drives but I'd like to hear about some real-world experiences. How
many people are even driving LTO3 drives through these appliances? How

I use Netbackup V5,0 for a not a long time, and I have a very basic

In an include list for Unix clients on the master server , I would like to

/users
/users/login
For some clients, /users/login is on the same filesystem than /users. So

solaris 10 client?
I'm running Netbackup 5.1 mp3 under Windows. I've got the original
install media for 5.1
Do I just install from the media then patch?
thanks in advance

It should be installed everywhere. However, if you can only install it

Why not just backup /users select cross mountpoints. It'll handle
both conditions.

Title: hanging bpbkar process
I had a backup timeout yesterday. bpbrm timed out after the configured interval (3 hours), but when I check to see what happened to the client process, bpbkar is still running (client/server on the same box) - it just hasn't done anything since three hours
Install the 5.1 client on the box itself using the cd media or

You cannot install remotely from Windows to a Solaris server (at least
I do not believe so).
Then after you do that you should be all set.

Often times the Media / Master server encounters and error and exits but cant notify the Client (they don't even attempt to) It sounds like you have at least some logs enabled on the Media server since you mention that you reviewed the Bpbrm log. So review the Media Server logs to see if you can
Try bpimagelist -backupid (backup_id)

Well the server/client are the same box so network issues
are out. I'm NFS mounting a slice to the NBU server and then backing up it up.
After about 3 hours, the client process just stops logging. I've checked bpbrm,
bptm, and bpbkar logs to no avail.
Could an NFS hicup cause this to

You're starting to write the application you've already

Ok then,
I can identify that the file I'm looking for is 'x'

How do I then go 'x' blocks from the start of the backup
