When the services are up

There must be an entry
for the job. If there is one, the wait. Wait a lot.

Do you have any media

I don't know whay is causing this, but I've performed the same install
and at the first site everything works fine.

The second site I can not get any backups to start.

Ive unistalled NBU with the following:

bp.kill_all

vxlogcfg -r -p 51216

create_nbdb -drop only (This returns can not ping server, server
unavailable) then says NBDB successfully removed

Remove everything under /usr/openv

Perform the reinstall

install all licenses

install options software

install MP 3 packs

configure the library

create the storage volumes with bringing the tape into the library

create a backup policy for the master server

select manual backup, (and nothing happens... no error nothing shows up
in the activity monitor)

Any Ideas ??

Re: [Veritas-bu] Migrate media server platform

2006-10-25 Thread Clooney, David
 Ian

If I was you, I would install new media server and then

- use bpmedia -movedb -m media_id -newserver hostname [-oldserver
hostname] [-v]
on media associated to old media server to reflect new media server
- use bpimage -newserver name [-oldserver name] [-id id]
on media associated with old media server , this then changes all
images on selected media to reflect new media server alleviating the
need for
  FORCE_RESTORE_MEDIA_SERVER = $media_server

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Migrate media server platform

Hi All,

More advice sought.
Our environment...
Win2K3 Netbackup Enterprise Master 6.0MP3
2 x Solaris 8 Media Servers 6.0MP3
8 x SDLT drives with SSO.

I want to swap out one of the Solaris media servers for a Linux
(SLES9) media server.
This is so I can utilise an HP disk array as DSU on Linux. The array
does not support Solaris.

My question is which would be the best approach? Any gotchas?

I am thinking of shutting down the Solaris media server, installing the
Linux Media server with the same hostname, then recover the catalog to
the new media server. Perhaps I can just tar up the appropriate media
catalog directories on the old box and restore them on the new.
Does the NB install process of a media server mess with the master db?
I suspect it would to add itself.
I'd prefer to keep the old media server hostname if possible.

Or should I just install a new media server with a new name, and
redirect any restores of data from the old media server to the new one?

Thanks in advance,

Ian

There is nothing in the drive also like a stuck tape.

Where do i look to find if the drive is at fault or not?

[Veritas-bu] Pre-requisites for SQL backups Windows 2000/2003

2006-10-25 Thread Veritas Netbackup
Dear All,

Does any one have a checklist or doc on the pre-requisites required on

a. Windows, ex: users, privleges e.t.c
b. SQL 2000/2005 user and privleges,

Info : Netbackup server on Solaris 5.1 MP4

Currently we face a uphill task almost everyday resolving SQL and Nt
related errors. Sometime solved by adding MP4, or starting the services
with a privleged user, using the sa on the API e.t.c.

The problems are more complex when we deal with windows 2003.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Tape not mounting

2006-10-25 Thread WEAVER, Simon

Hello Dave,
Is the drive SCSI connected correctly? Also terminated at the end of the
chain.

Funny, just sorted out an identical problem - start a job runs, attempts to
load in drive 1, downs the drive, mounts in drive 2.

My problem was the SCSI Cable BETWEEN the drives. Absolutely nothing wrong
with it from a visual perspective, but after changing the drive, it worked
fine.

Also, has this problem been constant, or has it just recently started to
occur? Have you attempted to try ROBTEST by chance? Does your robotic
library give an indication of a drive problem? Rebooting of the Robot
perhaps?

Using the device control panel can you mount a tape? (aka, can we prove

think of a single instance where it wasn't related to hardware failure.

[Veritas-bu] Linux Media Server, Adic Library, and Drivers

2006-10-25 Thread Brooks, Jason

We're testinga Linux media server now to try and resolve some NDMP issues. I have the Media server set up, talking to my Master, fiber connectivity to a tape drive (properly zoned), but I can't find drivers. I've contacted ADIC support, but they've been no help. I've found IBM drivers (library contains IBM LTO3s), but they don't work for fibre attached, just SCSI. The fibre attached drivers link to Emulex, but we have QLogic cards.

Now, I'm about at the end of my rope. Any suggestions? Contact Veritas support? My last hope is to wait on my ADIC Sales Rep's Engineer.

Thanks,

My own advice would be to check the manuals for the
pre-requirements. not too sure why you are getting problems on windows 2003

You should also be able to download the PDF manuals on the

[Veritas-bu] LTO3 Drivers - HP ESL

2006-10-25 Thread WEAVER, Simon
Title: Message

Hi Guys
Wonder if I could get some
assistance?
Have a HP ESL-322e Robotic Library using Ultrium 960
Drives

I have a driver on them, but they are dated 2004 !! I cannot for
the life of me find any NEW drivers for LTO3
Drives!

Would anyone happen to have a link or possibly provide some help
- I am still working on some odd issues within NBU, and drivers are the last
resort.

what do you see when you...

cat /proc/scsi/scsi

If it isn't there, then your O/S isn't seeing the drives, check your
zones again. Also, are you using the included qlogic driver to the
kernel (which distro and kernel are you using?) or have you installed
the qlogic Linux drivers? There shouldn't be a driver for the LTO3 drives,
it should be seen as a SCSI st device and the NBU install should set up
the SG driver correctly.

There are also great docs included with NBU for this.
I would also help when asking questions to supply all
the data needed:

- -O/S version and architecture?
- -NBU version and MP level?
- -which qlogic cards?

Thanks

Re: [Veritas-bu] Linux Media Server, Adic Library, and Drivers

2006-10-25 Thread Robin Small
We have to Linux media servers talking to a linux master. While they're
using an ADIC Pathlight VTL (FC connected with QLogic 23xx cards), to
the linux box it still tastes just like a scsi tape drive.

I want to think we used either the IBM tape drivers (an RPM was
available for SUSE on IBM's site), or left it to the standard linux
kernel with /dev/sgx and /dev/stx for the devices.

does a rpm -qa and some grepping

No drivers, just standard linux kernel.

Something I did have to do with SLES9 is to make sure the QLogic and
Adaptec cards were loaded in the initrd, so the device ordering would be
consistent when the box needed to get rebooted. We had a condition where
the device addresses (/dev/st#) would move to different numbers on a
system restart. Putting the drivers in the initrd fixed that and they
load in the correct order every time.

And, fwiw, we are (soon) getting ready to replace our scsi attached
Scalar 100 with a fiber attached Scalar i500. So I might be able to
shuffle some things to test out the FC vs SCSI attached drives if
there's a difference. But, I thought the Linux kernel treats FC and SCSI
the same way as far as system-to-device interaction goes.

hth,

~ Robin

Title: 6.0 advantages?

In an
environment with multiple media servers you only have to recover the Master in
a DR. This allows us to be up and recovering any server in the 2 hours it takes
to recover the catalog. If a media server is needed for throughput you can do a
basic install of Veritas on it and be up and running. With all the data on the
Master the media servers do not need any data recovered to be functional. I
like the way it auto restarts failed jobs, but it bit me last night when a job
tried to run 5 times and now I have 23 failures on the report for 1 server.

Re: [Veritas-bu] 6.0 scheduler issues

2006-10-25 Thread Jon Bousselot
I should note that I added the pre-MP4 patches, and left checkpoints
enabled. I only have three policies that use checkpoints, all of them
being large windows storage server NAS systems. The rest of my data is
oracle on solaris.
NB support said to call if the problem comes back, even though I have
left the checkpoints enabled. I think they just want to know if it failed.

If I get failures now, my only recourse is to disable checkpoints, leave
the pre-4 patches, and wait patiently for MP4.

Wow. 70 policy failures I bet that was annoying.

-Jon

I wish I would have gotten this thread on Friday, before I enabled
checkpoint restart on all 70 policies and spent all Monday freaking out.

An update on the support ticket...

After submitting logs and various other things requested by support, the
suggested solutions to my problem are:
 1. Delete the pempersist file on a regular basis.
 2. Disable checkpoints in the backup policy (this seems to be a major
 contributor to the problem)
 3. Install some PRE-MP4 engineering patches that were granted only
after the case was escalated. It is two files that you just replace and
 relaunch netbackup.
 4. Disable checkpoints and wait for MP4 which should be released in
 November 2006.

I have been deleting pempersist, and the problem goes away for five to
fourteen days. Adding the engineering patches worked fine, but it has
been less than a week, so I'll be watching the activity log closely. I
really depend on checkpoints because I'm backing up millions of files on
windows systems, and it takes a long time.

[Veritas-bu] problems with NDMP restore: error 49

2006-10-25 Thread Adam Solomon
Hi all,I'm running into a bit of a problem. We're doing
a DR rehearsal. The catalog restore to our Netbackup 6 mp3 server
failed. We had to import our tapes. When we attempt a restore to our
Netbackup filer using NDMP we got an error 49 10/25/2006 8:34:02 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=1051) client felix didn't start 10/25/2006 8:34:02 PM - Error bpbrm(pid=1051) client restore EXIT STATUS 49: client did not start
10/25/2006 8:34:36 PM - end Restore; elapsed time: 00:00:36Now the odd thing is that a filer backup/restore over NDMP does not require a client.Any
thoughts? We only have another 12 hours to resolve this before our
rehearsal ends, so any assistance you can offer would be appreciated.
Regards,Adam

Hi jon
Sadly not, which is why we ended up going down the HP Route -
Veritas are happy for us to use HP drivers but it just looks like they have
not been updated in a while.

  Are
the VERITAS drivers not working for you? I use 960's, and the 5.1
VERITAS driver is working just fine for me.

Should be on any NBU 5.x install CD under "Additional
Products" or somesuch. Let me know if you needs
  exacts...

  Cheers,

  Hi Guys
Wonder if I could get some
  assistance?
Have a HP ESL-322e Robotic Library using Ultrium 960
  Drives

I have a driver on them, but they are dated 2004 !! I cannot
for the life of me find any NEW drivers for LTO3
  Drives!

Would anyone happen to have a link or possibly provide some
help - I am still working on some odd issues within NBU, and drivers are the
  last resort.

  Thanks

Forgive me if I am wrong, but doesnt 5.x offer the
same functionaility of failed backups (retry!)

Because that is what I am seeing here, in a 5.1 environment..
As long as the window is open, the backups re-try until the threshold hits the
limit or the backup completes.

  In an
environment with multiple media servers you only have to recover the Master in
a DR. This allows us to be up and recovering any server in the 2 hours it
takes to recover the catalog. If a media server is needed for throughput you
can do a basic install of Veritas on it and be up and running. With all the
data on the Master the media servers do not need any data recovered to be
functional. I like the way it auto restarts failed jobs, but it bit me last
night when a job tried to run 5 times and now I have 23 failures on the report
  for 1 server.

Greg
First advantage I see is that 5.x is more stable than
6.0!
:-)

Suggest you wait
for the latest MP to come out, read comments on the list, and also on the
Symantec forums.
