I have successfully backed up SQL DB's and was able to restore them to
the original client machine. Now I tried taking the same backup and
restoring it to a different client running MSSQL 2005 I get 2 errors

We have Windows clients running NB_4.5. If will take some time to upgrade
the clients after the server has been upgraded to NB_6.0. Does anyone
know if you can backup-up and restore 4.5 Windows clients with a 6.0
Solaris server? Thanks

If I understood correctly, older clients are not supported - I think 5.1 or
higher is needed for 6.0!
My clients (some) run 3.4 and are not supported, and I cannot upgrade them
to the later version at this stage.
Hopefully they will be phased out in 2008.

It is not supported. You should be at 5.x or 6.0 for netbackup 6.0.

Hi,
I am using Netbakup 5.1MP6 on Solaris (Master /Media server). Client is
Gentoo Linux.
When I am restoring FULL + Incremental backuped data then the directory
which got updated in incremental backup shows restoration date time.
But when I am restoring data from only FULL backup then it
Not supported or won't work? We are running some 3.4 clients with the
master at NBU 5.12MP6 and they work fine. Unfortunately we can't upgrade
the Solaris 2.6 clients so we are stuck with 3.4. Of course if they
won't work with 6.x then we can push them to upgrade or get rid of the
boxes. :)
Is there a way in Netbackup that I can exclude a specific sub dir but
backup everything else. For instance we do not want to backup
/u01/home/test but we do want to backup everything else. Currently I
have my policy set up and have to put every directory in the policy
except the one i don't
Create a file called /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list
In that file, just put one line:
/u01/home/test
Save the file and run your backup.

Hey Steve.
Have you tuned the OS in any way?
Specifically with Sol8/9 there were many /etc/system entries required
for optimal (functional?) performance when the system is under load.
I understand this has gone away (??) in Sol 10, but I don't know if
there are new/other parameters that require
I just upgraded several versions of the NBU Client (3.4, 4.5 and 5.1) to
a NBU Master running 6.0. It really is a mixed bag. My goal was to
upgrade everything to at least 5.1 and I did eventually get that done
but in the mean time I migrated lots of clients with mixed versions.
Old System -
I'm in the same boat. I'm about to 10 on a T2000 and upgrade to 6.0 all
at the same time.yuck

Richard,
What version of Vault do you have? I am running 5.1 MP3 and there is
no retention mapping within each vault profile.
I have to create a profile for each offsite retention period.
Just as an FYI, I use a KORN script to run all my vaulting, since I
also inject my tapes and run
Yes, creating the file /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list will work, but
it affects all backups done on that client
Better to create /usr/openv/netbackup/exclude_list.[policy name]

Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu
In the duplication tab within the vault profile, configure retention to
be use mappings
It's the last item in the list.
create a file called:
/usr/openv/netbackup/db/vault/retention_mappings
and in the file, you create entries with two columns of numbers
The column on the left is the original
Thanks for the information, must have missed that!
But I can't use that in my environment, due to the fact that I would use too
many tapes to go offsite
My 1 Month offsite retentions all fit on 3 tapes, and I have my profile set for
3 drives
My 2 Month offsite retentions all fit on 2 tapes,
Good question.
I do not know.

Since it wasn't explicitly mentioned - you can tell your policy to
backup everything. The exclude file modifies that everything to mean
everything but what is in the file.

Sorry about that... The file would contain anything you don't want to
backup.
If I was trying to avoid backing up /export/home
I would add a line with /export/home
If I wanted to avoid all files that ended with dbf:
I would add a line with *.dbf.
And so on.

If anyone's still running NBU 4.5 and SSO, I'd really appreciate it if
you would send me the output of a couple of commands. (I'm playing with
some reporting scripts, and I'm using a new option of a command that I
haven't run before, and I need to make sure it's output looks similar on
NBU 4.5.
We're running vanilla. We'd inquired about this, and was directed to
the NetBackup Tuning Guide (pgs 152 - 155) and related Sun documentation.
Based on this, it doesn't appear as if the old changes are required. So
far, so good, however, based on your comments regarding load, I'm planning
on
Got a private response to my Q. Thanks!
