Re: [Veritas-bu] Status 14 but with exclude list plus open file disabled

2007-08-15 Thread Dave Markham
Thanks.

The problem is i cant remove the RSM service ( if thats whats referred
to in the technote ) as it is actually used on this client. I also
cannot stop and start it (AFAIK) while a backup runs.

I just cant understand if i have excluded *.wci and disabled open file
backups why is it still having problems.

Cheers

Strange problem i have posted about before where im getting a status 14
 on a windows client.

Master server is Solaris 9 running Netbackup 5.0mp7.

I am getting status 14 on full backups and the error is a known problem
 :-

WRN - Content Indexing Server: unable to pause catalog: Web (some files
 may not get backed up).

The technote says to exclude all .wci files which i have done and i have
also disabled open file backups for the server.

I cannot see now what else to do to stop this error so was hoping
someone was in the same position or had a work around?

 Thanks

[Veritas-bu] Reporting Tool for NetBackup

2007-08-15 Thread Kevin Whittaker
All,

I am in the process of looking at various reporting tools for NetBackup.
I just completed looking at backupVISUAL from agite software. It was a
very nice application.

I guess I wonder what everybody else thinks of the reporting tool that
they use?

Also what other tools should I look at?

Things I want to avoid:
1) JAVA based GUIs
2) Ones that require me to purchase a database application like ORACLE.
3) One that requires I load on each netbackup client
4) One that requires I load on each media server.

Any opinion on backupVISUAL or on any other application would be
appreciated.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Status 14 but with exclude list plus open file disabled -NEW INFO

2007-08-15 Thread Dave Markham
Actually this may be the right track but not slightly.

After enabling log level to 5 i have started seeing 10053 errors in the
bpkar log. It then seems to exit with status 14.

Now on the client itself i looked at the job tracker after i kicked a
manual backup off and it exited. Well the job tracker is still running
and counting files up. In a certain directory i am including so far
there are over 700,000 files. Does anyone think its just taking so long
to count the files its doing something dodgy?

The way i backup this client is with ALL_LOCAL_DIRECTORIES plus SYSTEM_STATE

I then exclude e: and f: and then include f::\nic\blah, f:\nic\blah2  etc

It seems in these f: directories there are shed loads of files?

Any pointers? How does snapshot thing work? Can i restore individual
files if i use it?

Any help appreciated

Cheers

[Veritas-bu] Linux client failure - Status 58

2007-08-15 Thread rcarlisle

I have a Linux client that fails every first attempt of their backup with a
status 59 - Can't connect to client
Second attempt connects immediately every time and completes successfully
Only one nic in the server
Client name set correctly
All DNS resolutions to master server appear correct
Blade server
On a separate subnet from master (but remember second attempt always works
immediately so routing appears ok)
Client connection time out has been bumped up and does not make a difference
Client and master/media are both at 6.0 MP4
Removing the policy and adding it again it always fixes the issue the first
time, then starts up again.

Any suggestions/thoughts?

Greetings,

We have been using Aptare for the past 5 years. I highly recommend it.
There are no agents installed on any clients or media servers. It comes
with Oracle built in, no extra purchase needed.
The only agents that are needed are installed on the Netbackup Master
Server. They are used to gather the data from
the Master and send it to the portal server. No JAVA gui's are needed, it
is accessed with a Web browser, IE or Firefox
work just fine. You can run customized reports and have them e-mailed.
Their support is excellent.
I would visit www.aptare.com for futher information.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Exchange off-host backup options

2007-08-15 Thread Philip McDougal
Tal,

If you have EMC equipment, have you thought of taking BCV snaps of your
exchange systems and then backing up the BCVs? We use replication
manager with this to schedule a backup job to kick off after the BCV
mounts and then dismount the volume after the backup job is finished so
it can do the next exchange server. Restores are really easy as well,
especially using Quests Exchange Recovery Manager.

HTH,

Phil.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Exchange off-host backup options

Hi Guys

Anyone done any exchange off-host backups?

I am looking for some information regarding Netbackup options for
Microsoft exchange.
I have been doing some investigating in what options we have when using
the netbackup advanced client with the netbackup Microsoft exchange
agent - specifically for performing an off-host backup

It seems we can only use Storage foundation's Flashsnap feature to mount
the exchange db on another netbackup client (not a windows media server)

I want to know if I have any other options or if this is all we can do
from a netbackup level while still performing an exchange backup (hence
using the ms exchange api)

We are using EMC storage so the option to use timefinder with the
exchange option is there but I am concerned there could be issue (as the
mapi is not used as in netbackup) e.g. mailbox backups or alternate
server recoveries etc

Tal

my top two picks would be Aptare Storage Console or Veritas Backup Reporter.
Either of those will meet your requirements, are fairly intuitive to use,
have a pretty high degree of customization, and produce a lot of nice canned

Re: [Veritas-bu] Very slow client

2007-08-15 Thread Rockey Reed
Scott,

The 2003 server should be protecting the shadow copy components not the
system state which is for Windows 2000. As for the other performance my
first suggestion is to check the NIC setting. If GigE then auto
negotiate is acceptable; however, if 100Mbps Ethernet is used force the
NIC to 100 FULL duplex. The C:\ drive, especially the Windows directory
will always be a pain from a speed and feed perspective, but not to the
limits you're seeing. Lastly, set the virus scan to scan inbound only,
using the outbound on a backup is a performance hit no one wants to
experience.

Thanks,
