[Veritas-bu] Different drive types with one robot

2007-08-27 Thread Evsyukov, Sergey
Hello,
We have IBM tape library with LTO-2 drives and planing to add LTO-3
drives and LTO-3 tapes to it.
How to configure netbackup infrastructure to use different drive types
with single robot?
Does Drive wizard detect new drives correctly or we need add drives
manually? Is new volume group fot LTO-3 needed for tape operations?

Thank you very much, Sergey

Re: [Veritas-bu] Different drive types with one robot

2007-08-27 Thread Martin, Jonathan
Go into your barcode rules add something like.

##L2 - hcart2 (current) Scratch
##L3 - hcart3 (new rule) Scratch

You might want to get rid of a DEFAULT rule in this case.

Netbackup will only use hcart2 media with hcart2 tape drives and 3 with
3 etc...

Depending on your version it might say 1/2 inch cartridge (hcart.)

Re: [Veritas-bu] Different drive types with one robot

2007-08-27 Thread Len Boyle
Good Morning Sergey,

The answers are it depends.

You have to make sure that you do not have the system try to load a
LTO-3 tape into a LTO-2 tape drive.

A simple method if you have the IBM 3584 tape library is to define a new
virtual library for the LTO-3 tape drives and treat them as two
libraries in netbackup. That is a new storage unit, and the lto-2 and
lto-3 tapes and tape drives would have different media settings (for
example hcart2 and hcart3).

We have not tried it yet, but it would seem that one could have one
virtual library with two different storage units with the tape drives
and tape media set to different media settings. One would also require
bar code rules to assign new tapes to the correct media settings. I am
guessing that this would require different volume pools.

It would be nice if netbackup could handle the fact that the tape drive
can write to two different media types, and read three different media
types.

Offloading the checksum is not the same as a full TCP offload. A true

I think a great deal of tuning would be required to achieve anywhere
near 10 GB w/ a single TCP stream.

I think you can tune your heart out and you'll never get anywhere close.
Maybe it's possible with a TOE card, but I haven't heard from anyone

You can put both in the same library. I have IBM 3584 with both LTO-2 and
LTO-3, same partition. I have done ADIC i2K with both in the same partition.
Same for ADIC i500. If the library can support it, NetBackup will use it.

The different drive types will automatically create a new volume group. My
3584 shows 00_000_TLD for the LTO-2 drives, and 01_000_TLD for the LTO-3
drives. If you use Vault, it will have to have a new vault policy since Vault
depends on the volume group (I spent over 1 week trying to figure that out).

You can not have your default Barcode rule distinguish between the media types
unless you do something unique in the first 6 Characters. I tried but could
not get it to work and the opened a case with Veritas. They told me I could
not do it and still not trash my media pool as exists. It you change how your
bar codes are read (by shifting the bar code reading rules), you will put every
tape that you have in the scratch pool.

You could partition your library, but then you have to allocate/dedicate slots
and MAIL SLOTs to each partition. The mail slots get to be tricky. If someone
puts the wrong tape in the wrong mail slot, it will go into the wrong robot.

The comment below about only using hcart2 media is an hcart2 drive is correct.
However, NetBackup does not enforce what you call the drive. You can define an
LTO-3 tape drive to be an hcart tape drive in NetBackup. It does not use the
labeled definitions for anything except putting the same media type in the
drive type. I will be putting in LTO-4 drives this month in an IBM library.
There is no hcart4 drive type. I will have to define them as hcart2 drives
because the folks that initially set up the NetBackup envirionment defined the
LTO-2 drives as hcart. The LTO-3's are now hcart3's. The only thing that I
have left is hcart2. Of course I could define them as DLT, but that would
probably confuse someone down the road.

To read backward capatibilty, just toggle the drive type, load the tape, do
what you need to do, unload the tape, toggle the drive to what you need it to
be. Not a hard or long process.

-- Original message --
From: Martin, Jonathan [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Go into your barcode rules add something like.

##L2 - hcart2 (current) Scratch
##L3 - hcart3 (new rule) Scratch

You might want to get rid of a DEFAULT rule in this case.

Netbackup will only use hcart2 media with hcart2 tape drives and 3 with 3 etc...

Depending on your version it might say 1/2 inch cartridge (hcart.)

Hello,

How to configure netbackup infrastructure to use different drive types with
single robot?
Does Drive wizard detect new drives correctly or we need add drives manually?
Is new volume group fot LTO-3 needed for tape operations?

[Veritas-bu] Different Ways to Install Client Software

Well, I modified the install_client_software script and replaced the

install the client when necessary.

Well, now they are turning off ftp on all servers. For some reason, the

Anyway, my question is what other ways are there to install the client

Re: [Veritas-bu] Different Ways to Install Client Software

2007-08-27 Thread Jeff Lightner
You can do the automated stuff using scp (or sftp) to your system as
they use the same ssh setup. The most appropriate way to do this would
be get the public key from your server that you're pushing the software
out from and putting it in the authorized keys file on the servers where
you're pushing to. This way it doesn't prompt for a password at all.

Obviously you need to restrict who has access to the account you're
pushing out from on the first server. I've been in more than one place
where we created a security server so that only the admins had access
to it and it was where we would push things out from.

2007-08-27 Thread Austin Murphy
Each machine/OS type has its own install_client script that needs to
be changed from RSH to SSH. I also found that it worked much better
when I used OpenSSH. SunSSH was horrid. You also need to make sure
agent-forwarding is enabled.

If you are already using SSH for administration, using it for
netbackup installs is trivial. It is certainly a lot easier than
installing from CD.

Or the real question, what are you trying to Achieve? You may want to
use
NBU Reporter or NBU NOM and assign lower levels of permission that way.

2007-08-27 Thread Justin Piszcz
Same thing, but its bpnotify_start and bpnotify_stop if I recall
correctly, check the docs.

You can try using these scripts, in windows version they are located
 C:\Program Files\VERITAS\NetBackup\bin\

 parent_start_notify.cmd
 parent_end_notify.cmd

Has anyone had experience with using NetBackup notify scripts in such a
way that they do not send e-mails for a job until all retries have been
exhausted? I've tried both bpend_notify on the client and
backup_exit_notify on the master server, and both version send out
alerts for each attempt of the job, where I only want to know what the
*final* status of the job was. I checked the archives but had
difficulty in narrowing down the search to this situation.

Re: [Veritas-bu] Splitting network Traffic

2007-08-27 Thread Rockey Reed
Yes, but not in the same policy. Just create two policies, using
separate storage units that are associated with different media servers
on the different subnets. The two media server could be on the same
physical machine that is addressed by alias names (e.g. backup01,
backup02, both which reside on backup)

Thanks,

Rockey

Can I split backup network traffic over two NICS? I know I can specify
backup traffic go over a different NIC than regular network traffic.
