[Veritas-bu] Re: Move backups off Data Domain to tape at specific intervals
Vault is definitely the way to go, but bpduplicate can be used at no extra charge. Anything more than basic usage, though, and you'll find yourself wanting vault. [Veritas-bu] Re: Infrant ReadyNAS
What do you mean the trick didn't work? You can certainly backup a CIFS share via NetBackup. You just have to specify the UNC pathname to it. [Veritas-bu] sniff...bpgp is gone from 6.5
I'm looking into whether or not this is true. If it is, it's time for an email campaign. Some see it as a security hole, and I think that's ridiculous. Anybody who is root/Administrator on a NetBackup master can push any file to any client any time they want via a backup/restore command. Removing bpgp only makes it take a few minutes instead of a few seconds. Other complaints about it over the years have been that it doesn't check for like/like. You can overwrite a directory with a file if you tell it to. For example, the following command would be VERY BAD! WRONGWAY# bpgp to client /etc/hosts /etc #DON'T DO THIS While this would be perfectly valid syntax with copy, cp, rcp, mv, etc, it is NOT proper syntax with bpgp. The command above would overwrite the /etc DIRECTORY with /etc/hosts, which, of course, would not be good for your client. (Some have even overwritten their root mount point.) Perhaps they got too many calls from people that did just that. Of course, about five lines of code could have fixed that problem. It doesn't allow you to copy a directory, but it doesn't check if what you're copying to is a directory. A simple check that the target file is or is not a directory would have sufficed. If it was a directory, it could just exit with error. But they chose instead to just pretend the command didn't exist. It's not documented; there's not even a Usage statement in the command itself, even if you do strings. If you call support and complain they tell you it's not supported. +-- |This was sent by [EMAIL PROTECTED] via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to [EMAIL PROTECTED] +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

[Veritas-bu] how to copy backups from data domaintotapew/netbackup 6.5
Wilkinson, Alex wrote: What is an OST interface ? The OpenSTorage interface, a new way to use your Data Domain boxes (and other boxes that support it) with NetBackup. It's not NFS or CIFS, it is its own transport. It is also not VTL. Think of it as a more intelligent DSU. In the case of DD Quantum, the data is sent over IP. With Falconstor, the data is sent over Fibre Channel. With DD boxes (which is what started this conversation), the first improvement you'll get simply by switching from NFS/CIFS to OST is a significant increase in performance. With all systems that support OST, you also get what NBU calls optimized deduplication, where NBU tells one OST device to copy a given backup to another OST device. The OST device (in this case, the DD box) will use dedupe and replication to get the data there. Once there, it informs NBU. Now NBU knows about both copies, just as if it had duplicated it via bpduplicate. Nice, huh? The nice thing that OST is supposed to support is tape-out functionality, where an OST device can copy it's backup to tapes and tell NBU which tapes got which backups. Again, just as if it NBU did the copy. Here's my blog post about OST: http://www.backupcentral.com/content/view/198/47/ +-- |This was sent by wcplis...@gmail.com via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
[Veritas-bu] Can any one help in generating the failing job in Netbackup.
chinni krishna wrote: I am trying to generate an failing event in netbackup environment. Please any one explain me how can create a failing job in Netbackup. I do a number of things to generate failed backups (when I'm testing reporting products, for instance). In NBU, I do things like this: 1. Create a Disk STU, then delete its directory 2. Delete all the free tapes in a tape library and mark the partial ones full (to create 96s) 3. Create funky host file entries so the hostnames of clients/servers resolve incorrectly, causing a failed backup 4. From the command line, you can also manually run policies and schedules that don't exist. Hope that helps. +-- |This was sent by wcplis...@gmail.com via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
[Veritas-bu] Netbackup 6.5 DSSU fragmentation
owiking wrote: Im having problems with my diskstage getting to fragmented and thus getting very slow performance when duplicating to tape. Running defrag isnt an option since the files are reaplced fequently and the defrag job will take to long time to run. From what Ive seen and read, this is a major problem for alot os users of Netbackup.thanks This IS a common problem that people have, and is one of the reasons that some people prefer VTLs. VTLs have a specialized file/storage system that is designed to handle the types of I/O that backups create. Regular filesystems are designed to support random I/O, where backups are very sequential I/O. The only thing you can do to minimize fragmentation in your setup is to completely fill and completely empty the system every night. When the diskstaging cache is completely emptied, then backups written from that point on will not be fragmented. However, if you are going to completely empty your cache, do so just before your backup so that last night's backup is around as long as possible for restores. +-- |This was sent by wcplis...@gmail.com via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
[Veritas-bu] PLEASE READ BEFORE POSTING
Before posting to this forum, you need to understand that it is also connected to a mailing list that existed before the forum, and that we must respect that community's wishes. EVERY forum post that you make is immediately sent to that mailing list as an email. Messages that include no context may make sense on a threaded forum, but make no sense to an email user that can't easily see the previous message to which you are replying. Therefore, when replying to another post (including your own), YOU MUST INCLUDE the relevant parts of the post to which you are replying in quotes. That way, when someone is following on the mailing list, they won't get an email that says Here's what you can do about that? without having any idea what that is. The easiest way to do this is to use your mouse to select the appropriate amount of text needed for context, then right click and select Copy. Paste that message into your forum post as the first paragraph or two. THEN SELECT THE PASTED TEXT AGAIN and click the Quote button just below the title of your post. That will place the Quote and End Quote codes around your text, causing it to show up as a quote in the forum post and in the email to the mailing list. Your assistance in this is greatly appreciated. +-- |This was sent by wcplis...@gmail.com via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
[Veritas-bu] Synthetic Backups
I've been testing it myself. I think you do need to keep that full backup around. The synthetic part of a synthetic backup is the consolidation of the full backup and the incrementals into a single image. This is done via duplication. What makes it synthetic is that it is created tape to tape instead of transferring a bunch of non-changed data from the client again. Once that new (synthetic) full is created, there is no need for previous fulls (other than for retention). The new full DOES NOT rely on the old full once it's created. +-- |This was sent by wcplis...@gmail.com via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu

[Veritas-bu] More Netbackup and VCB questions
For a particular guest, there is a 1TB VMDK, but there is currently only about 100GB of data on the VMDK. We see it get through the 100GB in record time, but then it just keeps going until it gets through the whole disk. Is this normal? I believe this is the way that FlashBackup works. It's a raw backup, so it's going to look at the whole disk each time, even if it only backs up part of it. The incremental backups in NBU are done file-level, so this should only happen with the full. +-- |This was sent by wcplis...@gmail.com via Backup Central. |Forward SPAM to ab...@backupcentral.com. +-- ___ Veritas-bu maillist - Veritas-bu@mailman.eng.auburn.edu http://mailman.eng.auburn.edu/mailman/listinfo/veritas-bu
