boot from SAN, if available

identical hardware will operate as dead master, nothing stored on internal
disks.

[Veritas-bu] Failover server for resilience

2011-03-12 Thread Rick Brown
Hello,
I would recommend having identical hardware for your windows servers, then on
the primary NBU server, run it on mirrored internal disks.
If one of the disks fails, you can still run on the other. In the event the
primary server fails, you should be able to remove one of the disks and insert
it into the failover server and bring up the system.
I'd also suggest multiple catalog backups throughout the day, I run 5 full
catalog backups per day.
You need to try to give yourself multiple ways to recover the server.
Tape, standy disks, and a standby server are a great start.
Be sure to test your ability to swap the drives and bring up the stanby server
to make sure your recovery solution works as expected. Document how to do each
tiny step!

Re: [Veritas-bu] Failover server for resilience

2011-02-01 Thread WEAVER, Simon (external)
This sounds like something I done before!
Providing this standby Server has same name and same IP and
configured with the same OS and Same NetBackup version, then its simply
a case of doing a restore of the Hot Catalog Backup!

Obviously the 2 servers cannot be on the network at the same time, but
if SERVER1 dies and you reconfigure the standby server as SERVER1, IP,
config, then it is a case of restore and you should be good to go.

Subject: [Veritas-bu] Failover server for resilience

Hi,

We have 2 Windows servers which will be installed and configured with
Netbackup V7.

The plan is to use one of the servers as a 'hot' standby machine and
only use if/when the primary server fails for any reason.

There is no budget for full clustering which would be ideal so I was
wondering if anyone has any experience or suggestions for this kind of
cheap resilience scenario. I did plan to rsync (or copy in Windows) the
Netbackup database on a regular basis and test everything would work as
expected after turning off the primary server but hopefully someone has
a better suggestion.

All the clients are Windows so I would put both Master servers in the
client configuration and also add all the clients to the both Netbackup
master servers. I did plan on stopping the Netbackup daemons and only
start if a failover was required.??

Please note, this is a disk to disk solution only no tapes are involved
which may make things easier or even harder!!.
