And this is why people using encryption in a big way buy custom-built
appliances (e.g. Decru DataFort). These do compression and encryption at
wire speed and don't impact the clients.

Doing client-side encryption is probably okay if you have 1 or 2 small
clients. Larger environments can use media-server based encryption since
your media servers will typically be bigger/better/faster than the clients.
Get bigger and you're into something like the DataForts. Get even bigger
and you go for something like the Brocade encrypting blade/switch.

When you use NBU client side encryption it removes any repeatable
patterns that the tape drive hardware compression works off. So there is
nothing to compress and so you end up using more tape space.
The only way to get around this issue is to also run with client side
compression since NBU will compress first then encrypt. But it adds even
more delays to the backup time. I would figure a fudge facture of 2-3
times increase in the backup time an average with both options in play.
Hope this helps.

Thanks for reply

But why every time when i was enable encryption the tape usage increased
that i know with encryption throughput will degrade somewhat.
Is there something i am missing to configure ???
even i open a call with symantec they doesn't having information
regarding this issue.

You disabled it explicitly? It's on by default at the hardware level.

Encrypted data is the same size as non-encrypted data. But after
encryption the data is incompressible.

Hello,

Unless you also enable client compression when you enable the client side
encryption, you lose the tape compression. How much you lose depends on how
much compression you had.

Hi

Does Any one having any Idea how tapes usages will increase after enable the
client side encryption ???

Right now I am using Client side Encryption and when i enable that thing my
Tape usages increase drastically so i am not confirm how many percentage will
increase after enable the encryption

I have 6.5.3 solaris X86 master server and itself media server with LTO3 and I
m doing 2 inline copy one for offsite and Is that any one to assign encryption
to particular copy or specific volume pool either client side encryption or
MSEO ??

Any help would be appreciate

Thanks in advance guys
