What issues are you seeing with the Quantum in regards to restore?

There is no OST functionality with NetApp. NetApp wants you to buy more
storage, and snap everything, to their storage. There is no need for
backup to them.

As for Falconstor, I've yet to see any customer with it. And I see a
lot of customers a week across many states.

The customers that have Datadomain, love it. Almost as fanatical as
NetApp users. DataDomain's new DD Bost software is intriguing, but why?
were they suffering against other players, that they had to offload
processing?

Quantum has one of the best implementations of OST, with their direct to
tape feature. But I'm not sure if their restore issues have been solved
yet?

Exagrid as well has some positive remarks.

I'm pretty sure, that you'll pay more by a lot for DataDomain, but will
it be worth it?

2010-06-08 Thread lselinger
Is anyone using a FalconStor or NetApp solution with OST?
If so, do you have an opinion as to how either one compares with Data
Domain?

Thanks!
JP

A little late to the party but .. currently we are running FalconStor with
OST on AIX running NBU 6.5.4 right now and love it. We are running a
single SIR (Single Image Repository) with a single VTL sitting in front of
4 drawers of SataBEASTs with another of the same configuration in the
wings to be sent to our alternate data center for replication. We also use
vault for offsite duplication right now (DR purposes) but once the
replication is in place I believe we'll be getting rid of tape all
together. For our Windows environments we are going to be employing NetApp
boxes but as of right now everything is just going through our existing
NBU env using the backing disk presented to NBU as LUNS or LSUs. I don't
have any first hand experience with Data Domain so I don't have a solid
comparison however.

Re: [Veritas-bu] FalconStor/NetApp w/OST

2010-06-07 Thread Wayne T Smith
Almost totally ignoring your questions, I'll offer that while NetApp has a
dedup capability, I'm unaware of an OST plugin.

We have a nice pair of Quantum 6550s using NetBackup 6.5.5 and OST ... and
are happy customers.

After using NetBackup Vault to duplicate backups to tape for off-site, OST
between the disk appliances is wonderful. The Quantum's replicate all
blocks between themselves and NetBackup's Storage Life Cycle policy
quickly and quietly verifies the duplicate on the remote 6550. We don't use
the 6550 tape capability, nor do we use the VTL/FC capability.

We had some getting-started problems, but it looks like the only thing that
will persist is that the Quantum OST plug-in can't deal with it's appliances
going away and reappearing on a new NFS share (our workaround - reboot the
NBU servers).

We had been using the NetBackup for Oracle DB agent software, but have
created NFS shares on the Quantum to send RMAN backups directly to backup
w/o NBU for at least some of these. A Quantum 6550 scheduled process does
periodic snapshots to create point in time versions of the backup NFS space
at the alternate 6550. Separate NFS mounts to separate DB only for security
reasons ... we use just one big dedup pool for NBU these NFS mounts. CIFS
available, but we do little Windows here.

Hope this helps!

Cheers, Wayne
