first?

I've had the opposite experience — for me, Versions handles external
modifications smoothly. Whether I'm working from Terminal, Xcode, or via ssh,
Versions picks up changes pretty quickly, and doesn't crash for me.

It does for me, but it doesn't mean you're doing something wrong. Are you
talking about a filesystem delete or `svn delete` outside of Versions? For me,
both cases work just fine. I'm on 10.6, but it works fine for me on 10.5 as
well.

I have always mixed matched command line and client (whether it's Versions or
Xcode), without quitting.
